Een bijzonder stukje James Bond geschiedenis wordt te koop aangeboden. Mermaid Cottage, het pittoreske voormalige buitenhuis van Ian Fleming in St Margaret’s Bay, Kent, staat nu te koop voor £1,75 miljoen.
Het art-decohuis werd in 1937 gebouwd en samen met zes andere huizen gehuurd door Fleming’s goede vriend Noël Coward en verhuurd aan goede vrienden. In 1951 kreeg Fleming de kans om het huurcontract van de vorige huurder over te nemen. Ian noemde het huis “Summer’s Lease” en hij en Ann verbleven vele weekenden en zomers vanuit Londen. Het huis bood hen een toevluchtsoord en afzondering, maar voor Ian was het huis ook een handige uitvalsbasis voor rondjes golf op Royal St George’s in Sandwich verderop, toegang tot de zee (hij zette een telescoop op om naar de voorbijvarende schepen en de verre kust van Frankrijk te kijken) en inspiratie voor zijn schrijfwerk. Het gebied was een inspiratiebron voor twee van zijn boeken: het derde James Bond-verhaal Moonraker en het kinderboek Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Mermaid Cottage heeft drie slaapkamers, twee badkamers, vier ontvangstruimten, een bibliotheek, een fitnessruimte en een balkon aan de voorzijde met uitzicht op het Kanaal. Binnen is het interieur netjes onderhouden na een renovatie van ongeveer £1 miljoen door de huidige eigenaar, Bond-liefhebber Mark Sawyer. Hij kocht het huis in 2008 voor 800.000 pond, maar biedt het nu aan vanwege ruimtegebrek voor zijn groeiende gezin.

The art-deco house was built in 1937 and rented along with six other houses by Fleming’s close friend Noël Coward and leased to close friends. In 1951, Fleming got the chance to take over the lease from the previous tenant. Ian named the house ‘Summer’s Lease’ and he and Ann stayed many weekends and summers from London. The house offered them refuge and seclusion, but for Ian, the house was also a convenient base for rounds of golf at Royal St George’s in Sandwich further afield, access to the sea (he set up a telescope to watch the passing ships and the distant coast of France) and inspiration for his writing. The area was an inspiration for two of his books: the third James Bond story Moonraker and the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Mermaid Cottage has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, four reception rooms, a library, a gym and a balcony at the front overlooking the Channel. Inside, the interior has been neatly maintained after a renovation of about £1 million by the current owner, Bond enthusiast Mark Sawyer. He bought the house in 2008 for £800,000, but is now offering it due to lack of space for his growing family.
