Een van de kenmerken van de James Bond-films zijn de vaak exotische locaties. Van Londen tot Monte Carlo, van de Zwitserse Alpen tot de Bahama’s. Uitgeverij Assouline heeft het boek James Bond Destinations uitgebracht, geschreven door Daniel Pembrey.

Met een afmeting van 25 x 33 cm, 328 pagina’s en een aantrekkelijke harde kaft is het boek een indrukwekkend geheel. En terecht, aangezien de meeste James Bond-boeken van de afgelopen jaren tot de categorie koffietafelboeken behoren: groot en zwaar. Dit maakt dit boek iets handzamer. En zoals bij de meeste boeken is de gouden kaft het meest opvallende kenmerk en nodigt het je meteen uit om een kijkje te nemen. Maar wie denkt dat het boek als reisgids kan dienen, heeft het mis.

Het is een heel ander boek dan de meeste James Bond-liefhebbers hadden gehoopt. Wie echter echt de filmlocaties over de hele wereld wil bezoeken, kan het beste de boeken van On The Tracks of 007 raadplegen. Maar is het boek de moeite waard voor veel James Bond-fans? Is dit een boek dat in je boekenkast thuishoort? We zullen proberen een antwoord op die vraag te geven.

Measuring 25 x 33 cm, with 328 pages and an attractive hard cover, the book is an impressive piece of work. And rightly so, since most James Bond books in recent years have belonged to the coffee table book category: large and heavy. This makes this book a little more manageable. And as with most books, the golden cover is the most striking feature and immediately invites you to take a look inside. But anyone who thinks the book can serve as a travel guide is mistaken.

It is a very different book than most James Bond enthusiasts had hoped for. However, if you really want to visit the film locations around the world, it is best to consult the books by On The Tracks of 007. But is the book worthwhile for many James Bond fans? Is this a book that belongs in your bookcase? We will try to answer that question.

Informatieve boeken kunnen op verschillende manieren worden gedefinieerd. Is het een boek vol feiten, een naslagwerk of gewoon een boek dat leuk is om te lezen? Naar onze mening valt James Bond Destinations in de laatste categorie. Het is leuk om te lezen en leuk om doorheen te bladeren. Maar zoals gezegd, je komt er ongespecificeerde reisbestemmingen tegen. Het boek is ruim opgezet en de inhoudsopgave vertelt je hoe je met James Bond de wereld rond kunt reizen. En het zal je niet verbazen dat de reis begint in Jamaica: de geboorteplaats van zowel de literaire als de filmische James Bond. De hoofdstukken zijn erg kort qua tekst. Geen enkel hoofdstuk is langer dan één A4-pagina. De teksten zijn echter allemaal samengesteld uit uitspraken van cast- en crewleden en (uiteraard) producenten Michael G. Wilson en Barbara Broccoli.

Informative books can be defined in various ways. Is it a book full of facts, a reference work, or simply a book that is enjoyable to read? In our opinion, James Bond Destinations falls into the latter category. It is enjoyable to read and fun to leaf through. But as mentioned, you will encounter unspecified travel destinations. The book is spacious and the table of contents tells you how you can travel around the world with James Bond. And it will come as no surprise that the journey begins in Jamaica: the birthplace of both the literary and cinematic James Bond. The chapters are very short in terms of text. No chapter is longer than one A4 page. However, the texts are all composed of statements from cast and crew members and (of course) producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Maar het is geen reisgids en er staat maar weinig informatie in. Is het dan een must-have voor Bond-fans? Qua uiterlijk heeft het zeker potentieel, en als het boek ergens ligt uitgestald, zullen bezoekers geneigd zijn om het te bekijken en door te bladeren. Wat vooral leuk is voor Bond-fans, is dat een groot aantal foto’s ‘nieuw’ is: we hebben ze nog nergens anders gezien. En ja, zoals bij bijna elk James Bond-boek, staan ook in dit boek foto’s die we al vele malen eerder hebben gezien.

Het enige dat mensen zou kunnen afschrikken, is de prijs. Het boek kost ongeveer € 120. Als het boek de helft goedkoper was, zouden meer James Bond-liefhebbers ervoor kiezen om het te kopen.

But it’s not a travel guide and there’s not much information in it. So is it a must-have for Bond fans? In terms of appearance, it certainly has potential, and if the book is displayed somewhere, visitors will be inclined to take a look and leaf through it. What is particularly appealing to Bond fans is that a large number of the photos are “new”: we haven’t seen them anywhere else. And yes, as with almost every James Bond book, this one also contains photos that we have seen many times before.

The only thing that might put people off is the price. The book costs around £100. If the book were half the price, more James Bond enthusiasts would choose to buy it.
