Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond Volume 1
Ze hebben net zoveel introductie nodig als de Aston Martin DB5 uit Goldfinger: het schrijversduo Ajay Chowdhury en Matthew Field. Hun nieuwste boekproject is immens: Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond. Afgelopen november verscheen het eerste deel.
Het boek weegt 3,6 kg, heeft 418 afbeeldingen en meer dan 800 (unieke) foto’s. Met zijn afmetingen van 32 bij 27 cm is het ook echt een indrukwekkend verschijnsel. En dan te bedenken dat dit slechts het eerste deel van een trilogie is. De vraag is natuurlijk of de inhoud net zo indrukwekkend is als de omvang van het boek. Fields en Chowdhury kennende zal er veel research aan vooraf zijn gegaan.
They need as much introduction as the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger: writing duo Ajay Chowdhury and Matthew Field. Their latest book project is immense: Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond. Last November, the first volume was published.
The book weighs 3.6 kg, has 418 illustrations and more than 800 (unique) photos. Measuring 32 by 27 cm, it is truly impressive. And to remember that this is only the first part of a trilogy. The question, of course, is whether the content is as impressive as the size of the book. Knowing Fields and Chowdhury a lot of research has been done.
Maar wat kunnen we verwachten van de inhoud? In het eerste persbericht van uitgever Porter Press International staat ‘Een diepgaand overzicht van alle voertuigen uit de James Bond-films’. En dat is nogal een uitspraak als je bedenkt hoeveel er door de decennia heen al is geschreven over de voertuigen van James Bond. Als advocaat van de duivel was onze vraag dan ook vooral: is er meer te vertellen over de voertuigen en wat maakt dit boek uniek? En vooral: is het de moeite waard om op je boekenplank te hebben staan. Of, gezien het formaat, op tafel.
We hebben in onze boekenkast gekeken en er zijn in de loop der jaren een aantal boeken over James Bond-auto’s verschenen. In 2010 verscheen het officiële boek Bond Cars And Vehicels van Dorling Kindersley en 10 jaar later het boek 50 Greatest James Bond Cars. Beide boeken hebben weinig inhoud en laten vooral foto’s zien die we al kenden. In 2021 kwam er nog een boek bij: Bond Cars: The Definitive History. Het boek, verkrijgbaar in hardcover en softcover, ging meer de diepte in, maar behandelde vooral de auto’s waarin James Bond zelf reed in de films. En natuurlijk zijn er ook boeken geschreven over alleen James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5. Hoewel het boek James Bond’s DB5 behoorlijk compleet is, kan het niet op tegen de DB5 bijbel: The Most Famous Car In The World van Dave Worall. Kortom, er is wel wat geschreven over de James Bond auto’s, maar niet met heel veel informatie. En dat moest veranderen moesten Ajay en Matthew gedacht hebben.
But what can we expect from the content? The first press release from publisher Porter Press International says ‘An in-depth look at every one of the vehicles in the James Bond movies’. And that’s quite a statement when you consider how much has already been written about James Bond vehicles over the decades. So, as devil’s advocate, our question was mainly: is there more to tell about the vehicles and what makes this book unique? And above all: is it worth having on your bookshelf. Or, given its size, on the table.
We looked through our bookshelves and a number of books on James Bond cars have been published over the years. In 2010 the official book Bond Cars And Vehicels by Dorling Kindersley was published and 10 years later the book 50 Greatest James Bond Cars. Both books have little written content and mainly show pictures we already knew. In 2021, another book was added: Bond Cars: The Definitive History. The book, available in hardcover and softcover, went into more depth, but mainly covered the cars James Bond himself drove in the films. And of course, books have also been written just about James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5. Although the book James Bond’s DB5 is pretty complete, it cannot compete with the DB5 bible: The Most Famous Car In The World by Dave Worall. In short, there has been some writing about the James Bond cars, but not a whole lot of information. And that had to change Ajay and Matthew had to have thought.
Niet alleen de auto’s waarin James Bond heeft gereden komen aan bod in Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond. Ook andere voertuigen die een prominente rol speelden in de film worden uitgelicht. En het auteursduo dook in de geschiedenis van de vele voertuigen. Persoonlijke archieven en archieven van automerken werden geraadpleegd, productiepersoneel en acteurs werden geïnterviewd. Alles werd uit de kast getrokken om informatie over het voertuig naar boven te halen. En we kunnen zeggen dat ze daarin zijn geslaagd. Het boek is een unieke compilatie geworden van verhalen die een zo compleet mogelijk verhaal vertellen over de voertuigen. Een ongelooflijk mooi voorbeeld is het verhaal over de lijkwagen uit Dr No: hoe kwam het voertuig in de film terecht, hoeveel werd er per dag voor betaald, hoe verliepen de opnames en wat gebeurde er daarna met de auto. Ondanks het feit dat er veel informatie boven water is gekomen, moeten we ook tot de conclusie komen dat de geschiedenis van veel voertuigen niet meer of niet in zijn geheel te achterhalen is. Wat voor ons als liefhebbers heel waardevol is, waren op het moment van filmen gewoon objecten die tijdelijk werden gebruikt en daarna een ander leven kregen. En gelukkig zijn veel voertuigen teruggevonden, onder andere door de Ian Fleming Foundation. En al die informatie heeft het tweetal ongelooflijk goed en duidelijk verwoord in het boek.
Not only the cars James Bond drove are featured in Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond. Other vehicles that played a prominent role in the film are also highlighted. And the author duo delved into the history of the many vehicles. Personal archives and archives of car brands were consulted, production personnel and actors were interviewed. Everything was pulled out to surface and merge information about the vehicle. And we can say they succeeded. The book has become a unique compilation of stories that tell a complete story about the vehicles. An incredible example is the story about the hearse from Dr No: how did the vehicle end up in the film, how much was paid for it per day, how did the filming go and what happened to the car afterwards. Despite the fact that a lot of information has surfaced, we also have to come to the conclusion that the history of many vehicles can no longer be traced, or not in its totality. What is very valuable to us enthusiasts were, at the time of filming, simply objects that were used temporarily and then given another life. And fortunately, many vehicles have been recovered, including by the Ian Fleming Foundation. And all that information the pair have articulated incredibly well and clearly in the book.
Unieke foto’s
Een James Bond boek wordt vaak ook gewaardeerd door de foto’s die erin staan. We zien vaak dezelfde, bekende foto’s langskomen in boeken die officieel worden ondersteund door EON Productions. Voor Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond is dit echt een ander verhaal. In meer dan 20 jaar als James Bond-liefhebber heb ik veel foto’s gezien, maar in Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond word je getrakteerd op een lading uniek beeldmateriaal. De foto’s komen uit de archieven van fabrikanten en van James Bond-liefhebbers over de hele wereld. En dat, naast de tekstuele inhoud, maakt het boek ongelooflijk uniek.
Unique photos
A James Bond book is often valued because of the photos in it. We often see the same, familiar photos come along in books officially supported by EON Productions. For Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond, this is really a different story. In more than 20 years as a James Bond enthusiast, I have seen many photos, but in Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond you are treated to a load of unique footage. The photos come from the archives of manufacturers and James Bond enthusiasts around the world. And that, alongside the textual content, makes the book incredibly unique.
Aston Martin DB5
Het eerste deel van Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond gaat over de jaren 60 en Diamonds Are Forever. Het kan niet anders dan dat een groot deel van het boek gaat over de geschiedenis van de Aston Martin DB5. De auto heeft James Bond beroemd gemaakt en visa versa. De complete geschiedenis van de verschillende DB5’s uit de film is te lezen, evenals de promotiewagens die later zijn gebruikt. De teksten bevatten unieke foto’s en ander beeldmateriaal van de beroemdste auto ter wereld. Maar ook de rest van het voertuig uit de jaren van Sean Connery en George Lazenby krijgt de nodige aandacht, inclusief de Moonbuggy.
Aston Martin DB5
The first volume of Spy Octane: The Vehicels of James Bond is about the 1960s and Diamonds Are Forever. It could hardly be otherwise, but much of the book is about the history of the Aston Martin DB5, the car made James Bond famous and visa versa. The complete history of the different DB5’s models from the film can be read, as well as the promotional cars used later. The texts include unique photos and other footage of the world’s most famous car. But the rest of the vehicle from the years of Sean Connery and George Lazenby also gets due attention, including the Moonbuggy.
Conclusie
We kunnen niet anders dan tot de conclusie komen dat dit boek een echte must-have is voor James Bond-fans. Een completer verhaal over de voertuigen van James Bond is bijna niet denkbaar. En dan te bedenken dat er nog twee delen volgen! De teksten lezen prettig en de lay-out is rustig. Het is alleen geen boek dat je even op schoot legt, je moet er echt even voor gaan zitten. Maar dat betekent ook dat je de teksten met aandacht kunt lezen en kunt genieten van de unieke afbeeldingen. Hoewel we de omslag erg kunnen waarderen, vinden we het toch jammer dat (alweer) de DB5 op de omslag staat. Een mooie, unieke foto van de Ford Mustang Mach I uit Diamonds Are Forever had wat ons betreft zeker gemogen. Erg benieuwd welke foto gekozen zal worden voor deel 2 en 3. Hopelijk een keer geen Aston Martin.

Conclusion
We must conclude that this book is a real must-have for James Bond fans. A more complete story about James Bond’s vehicles is hardly imaginable. And to think that two more volumes will follow! The texts read pleasantly and the layout is clean. It is just not a book you put on your lap, you really have to sit down for it. But that also means you can read the texts with attention and enjoy the unique illustrations. While we can really appreciate the cover, we are less pleased to see the DB5 on the cover (again). We certainly could have appreciated a nice, unique picture of the Ford Mustang Mach I from Diamonds Are Forever. Very curious to see which photo will be chosen for parts 2 and 3. Hopefully no Aston Martin for once.
