Global James Bond Day kon voor mij geen beter einde brengen. Waar de teleurstelling van het uitstellen van No Time To Die nog na gonsde kwam er goed bericht onder embargo: de Folio Society komt wederom met een James Bond-titel. Ditmaal On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Voor de James Bond-liefhebbers behoeft dit eigenlijk geen introductie meer te hebben. De Engelse uitgever bracht al eerder James Bond-boeken van Ian Fleming uit. Casino Royale, From Russia With Love, The Spy Who Loved Me en Moonraker zijn zo maar een greep uit de titels die als hardcover in een sleeve verschenen. Stuk voor stuk pareltjes om in de boekenkast te hebben staan. Vooral de illustraties van Fay Dalton spreken tot de verbeelding.

Global James Bond Day couldn’t have ended better for me. While the disappointment of the postponement of No Time To Die was still lingering, some good news came under embargo: the Folio Society is once again releasing a James Bond title. This time it’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

For James Bond enthusiasts, this really needs no introduction. The English publisher has previously released James Bond books by Ian Fleming. Casino Royale, From Russia With Love, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker are just a few of the titles that have been published as hardcovers in a sleeve. Each and every one of them is a gem to have on your bookshelf. Fay Dalton’s illustrations in particular appeal to the imagination.

Nu is dus de tiende titel verschenen: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Toevallig of niet: dit is ook het tiende James Bond-verhaal dat Ian Fleming schreef. Het originele verhaal van Fleming verscheen op 1 april 1963 bij uitgever Jonathan Cape. Dat James Bond toen populair was bleek uit de verkoop van het boek in de eerste maand: in het Verenigd Koninkrijk gingen al 60.000 exemplaren over de toonbank. Het boek werd diverse keren (zowel in het Engels als andere talen) uitgegeven, een stripverhaal, een luisterboek en in 2014 bij de BBC als hoorspel uitgebracht, met Toby Stephens (Gustav Graves in Die Another Day) als James Bond.

The Blofeld Trilogy

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is het tweede boek uit The Blofeld Trilogy. Samen met de titels Thunderball en You Only Live Twice is dit het boek waarin 007 achter zijn aartsrivaal aangaat: Ernst Stavro Blofeld. En daar begint het boek dan ook mee. Bond krijgt informatie dat Blofeld is neergestreken in de ijzige toppen van de Alpen. In een exclusief skigebied heeft Blofeld een onderzoeksstation waarbij hij jonge Britse meisjes geneest tegen allerlei allergieën. Dit zou gaan middels onorthodoxe behandelingen. Kan het waar zijn dat Blofeld zijn leven heeft veranderd en zich met goedaardige wetenschap bezighoudt? Bond moet al zijn vaardigheden gebruiken om daar achter te komen. Of te sterven op 10.000 voet.

Now the tenth title has been published: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Coincidentally or not, this is also the tenth James Bond story written by Ian Fleming. Fleming’s original story was published on 1 April 1963 by Jonathan Cape. James Bond’s popularity at the time was evident from the book’s sales in the first month: 60,000 copies were sold in the United Kingdom alone. The book has been published several times (both in English and other languages), as a comic book, an audiobook and, in 2014, as a radio play by the BBC, with Toby Stephens (Gustav Graves in Die Another Day) as James Bond.

The Blofeld Trilogy

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is the second book in The Blofeld Trilogy. Together with Thunderball and You Only Live Twice, this is the book in which 007 goes after his arch-rival: Ernst Stavro Blofeld. And that’s where the book begins. Bond receives information that Blofeld has settled in the icy peaks of the Alps. In an exclusive ski resort, Blofeld has a research station where he cures young British girls of all kinds of allergies. This is said to be done through unorthodox treatments. Could it be true that Blofeld has changed his life and is now engaged in benign science? Bond must use all his skills to find out. Or die at 10,000 feet.

De Folio Society heeft met hun uitgave van On Her Majesty’s Secret Service een meesterwerk afgeleverd dat zowel literair als visueel indruk maakt.
