Wie aan James Bond denkt, denkt aan snelle auto’s, mooie vrouwen en vooral: de prachtige locaties waar gefilmd is. Menig James Bond-fan reist de wereld over om deze locaties te bezoeken, vaak met het boek On The Tracks of 007 in de hand. Vorige week verscheen een speciale editie over Thailand.

On The Tracks: het begin
Het avontuur van On The Tracks of 007 begon 25 jaar geleden. In het voorwoord laat Martijn Mulder weten dat dit hem meer plezier heeft gebracht dan hij ooit had kunnen bedenken. “Het bracht mij niet alleen op de mooiste plekken van de wereld, maar ook leerde ik heel veel mensen kennen, van wie ik sommigen zelfs als mijn vrienden kan bestempelen.”

Het eerste verhaal dat hij ooit schreef over het reizen naar James Bond-locaties ging over Azië. In 1995 begon Martijn zijn hobby: het vinden van filmlocaties uit James Bond-films. Het internet stond nog in de kinderschoenen en alles googelen was er toen nog niet bij. Hij startte zijn eigen website met de titel The James Bond Locations Page, met informatie uit verschillende magazines, krantenartikelen en boeken. Zo kwam hij in contact met wijlen Dirk Kloosterboer. Dirk was in 1995 of 1996 in Hongkong en Thailand geweest. Ze hadden inmiddels zoveel informatie verzameld dat het idee ontstond om er een boek van te maken. Hun eerste verhaal werd Faces of Asia, gebaseerd op de reis die Dirk had gemaakt. Het werd het begin van wat uiteindelijk zou uitgroeien tot het boek On The Tracks of 007. Zelf reisde Martijn pas in 2005 naar het Verre Oosten.

Anyone who thinks of James Bond thinks of fast cars, beautiful women and, above all, the stunning locations where the films were shot. Many James Bond fans travel the world to visit these places, often with the book On The Tracks of 007 in hand. Last week, a special edition about Thailand was released.

On The Tracks: The Beginning
The adventure of On The Tracks of 007 began 25 years ago. In the foreword, Martijn Mulder writes that it has brought him more joy than he could ever have imagined. “It not only took me to some of the most beautiful places in the world, but also allowed me to meet many wonderful people – some of whom I can even call my friends.”

The first story he ever wrote about travelling to James Bond locations was set in Asia. In 1995, Martijn began his hobby: tracking down filming locations from the James Bond films. The internet was still in its infancy back then, and “googling” everything simply wasn’t an option. He launched his own website, The James Bond Locations Page, featuring information gathered from various magazines, newspaper articles and books.

It was through this that he came into contact with the late Dirk Kloosterboer. Dirk had visited Hong Kong and Thailand in 1995 or 1996. By then, they had collected so much information that the idea of turning it into a book began to take shape. Their first story became Faces of Asia, based on the journey Dirk had made. It marked the beginning of what would eventually grow into the book On The Tracks of 007. Martijn himself did not travel to the Far East until 2005.

Faces of Asia 2.0
Het oorspronkelijke verhaal van Faces of Asia richtte zich op de steden Hongkong en Macau, plus Thailand. Maar in de loop der jaren is er veel meer informatie beschikbaar gekomen, bijvoorbeeld over de locatie van de beroemde spiraalsprong met de AMC Hornet uit The Man With The Golden Gun. In de “nieuwe” versie is dan ook besloten om alleen Thailand te beschrijven, waar een deel van zowel The Man With The Golden Gun als Tomorrow Never Dies werd opgenomen.

Het nieuwe boek valt op door de omslag. Net als bij het eerder verschenen boek over Japan is de cover getekend door Jeff Marshall. Op de omslag prijken Roger Moore en Pierce Brosnan, samen met diverse scènes uit beide films.

Het boek bevat niet alleen veel informatie uit het oorspronkelijke Faces of Asia, maar Martijn heeft ook aanvullende informatie ontvangen van diverse James Bond-fans die Thailand bezochten. Veel nieuwe gegevens en foto’s werden gedeeld door Thomas Gleitsmann, die vooral veel locaties uit Tomorrow Never Dies wist te vinden.

Het nieuwe boek is onderverdeeld in drie categorieën: Welcome to Thailand, Bangkok en Phang Nga Bay. Ook is er een duidelijk overzicht opgenomen waar de diverse kaarten in het boek te vinden zijn – handig als je zelf op reis gaat.

Het eerste hoofdstuk gaat over Thailand. Niet alleen James Bond staat hierin centraal; het boek begint met algemene informatie over het land, zoals het klimaat en de economie. Ook wordt kort stilgestaan bij andere grote films die in Thailand zijn opgenomen, zoals Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Alexander (2004) en de negende film uit de Fast & Furious-reeks (2021). Vervolgens duik je in de James Bond-films die er zijn gefilmd.

De Thaise hoofdstad, met meer dan acht miljoen inwoners, was het decor voor veel scènes uit The Man With The Golden Gun. Zo werden er diverse scènes met Mary Goodnight in een hotel opgenomen en vinden we in Bangkok de karateschool van Hai Fat. Ook twee spectaculaire achtervolgingen werden daar gefilmd: de bootachtervolging door de kanalen van de stad, en de achtervolging met de AMC Hornet die eindigt met de beroemde spiraalsprong.

Het laatste deel van het boek behandelt de locaties rond de baai. Een bepaald eiland werd wereldberoemd en later omgedoopt tot James Bond Island. Het is het eiland waar Francisco Scaramanga zijn basis had. In deze omgeving werden ook scènes uit Tomorrow Never Dies opgenomen, waarin James Bond en Wai Lin achter de stealthboot van Carver aangaan.

Reisboek
De nieuwe uitgave van On The Tracks of 007 is wederom een echte reisgids. Elk onderdeel begint met een kaart waarop locaties staan aangegeven met letters. Daarna volgt informatie met beelden uit de film en hoe de locatie er nu uitziet. Diezelfde letters komen daarbij steeds terug. Het geheel is overzichtelijk en bevat veel interessante informatie. Een echte aanrader voor elke James Bond-liefhebber die graag zelf op pad gaat naar de verre oorden waar 007 ook is geweest.

Voorwoord
Het voorwoord van On The Tracks of 007: Guide to Thailand is geschreven door Bond-girl Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight in The Man With The Golden Gun). Ze vertelt over het geweldige avontuur in Thailand en vooral over de glamour van het filmmaken: van luxe hotels tot een hutje op een Thais eiland zonder goede voorzieningen.

Naast het originele boek van On The Tracks of 007 verscheen eerder al een special: On The Tracks of 007: Guide to Japan. Naast het schrijven van boeken organiseerde Martijn de afgelopen decennia ook unieke groepsreizen naar de locaties van James Bond-films, zoals de Aston Martin Tour (2013) en de Amsterdam Tour (2015). In 2017 leidde hij een groep naar Japan ter viering van de 50e verjaardag van You Only Live Twice (1967). Dat was een groot succes, dat vorig jaar werd herhaald ter gelegenheid van de 50e verjaardag van On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). Samen met James Bond-acteur George Lazenby reisde de groep toen naar Portugal en Zwitserland, waar grote delen van de film zijn opgenomen.

On The Tracks of 007: Guide to Thailand bevat 136 pagina’s, honderden foto’s van achter de schermen, en beelden van toen en nu. Het boek is verkrijgbaar in twee edities: de standaardeditie (€ 30,–) en een gelimiteerde, gesigneerde editie (€ 50,–). Faces of Asia 2.0
The original Faces of Asia story focused on the cities of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Thailand. Over the years, however, a great deal more information has become available — for example, about the exact location of the famous spiral jump with the AMC Hornet from The Man With The Golden Gun. In the “new” version, it was therefore decided to focus solely on Thailand, where parts of both The Man With The Golden Gun and Tomorrow Never Dies were filmed.

The new book stands out thanks to its striking cover. As with the earlier Japan edition, the artwork was created by Jeff Marshall. The cover features Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan, along with various scenes from both films.

The book not only includes much of the information from the original Faces of Asia, but Martijn has also received additional material from several James Bond fans who have visited Thailand. Many new details and photos were shared by Thomas Gleitsmann, who managed to locate numerous sites from Tomorrow Never Dies.

The new edition is divided into three sections: Welcome to Thailand, Bangkok, and Phang Nga Bay. There is also a clear overview indicating where to find the different maps in the book – a handy feature for anyone planning a trip themselves.

The first chapter focuses on Thailand itself. Here, James Bond is not the only subject; the book begins with general information about the country, such as its climate and economy. It also briefly highlights other major films shot in Thailand, including Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Alexander (2004) and the ninth Fast & Furious film (2021). From there, readers dive into the James Bond adventures that were filmed in the country.

The Thai capital, home to more than eight million people, provided the backdrop for many scenes in The Man With The Golden Gun. Several scenes featuring Mary Goodnight were filmed in a hotel in Bangkok, which also served as the location of Hai Fat’s karate school. Two spectacular chase sequences were shot there as well: the famous boat chase through the city’s canals, and the car chase with the AMC Hornet that ends with the iconic spiral jump.

The final part of the book covers the locations around the bay. One particular island became world-famous and was later renamed James Bond Island. It was the island where Francisco Scaramanga’s hideout was located. The surrounding area also featured in Tomorrow Never Dies, in which James Bond and Wai Lin pursue Carver’s stealth boat.

Travel Guide
The new edition of On The Tracks of 007 once again serves as a true travel guide. Each section begins with a map marking the locations with letters. This is followed by information, stills from the films, and photos showing how the sites look today. The same letters are used throughout for easy reference. The layout is clear and full of fascinating details — a must-have for every James Bond enthusiast keen to follow in 007’s footsteps to exotic destinations around the world.

Foreword
The foreword to On The Tracks of 007: Guide to Thailand is written by Bond girl Britt Ekland (Mary Goodnight in The Man With The Golden Gun). She shares memories of her wonderful adventure in Thailand and reflects on the glamour of filmmaking — from luxury hotels to a modest hut on a Thai island with few facilities.

In addition to the original On The Tracks of 007 book, a special edition titled On The Tracks of 007: Guide to Japan was previously released. Over the past decades, Martijn has also organised unique group tours to James Bond film locations, such as the Aston Martin Tour (2013) and the Amsterdam Tour (2015). In 2017, he led a group to Japan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of You Only Live Twice (1967) — a trip that proved so successful it was repeated last year to mark the 50th anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969). Accompanied by James Bond actor George Lazenby, the group travelled to Portugal and Switzerland, where much of the film was shot.
