Het is een zwaar gewicht. Zowel letterlijk als figuurlijk: het boek The James Bond Archives. Met een ongekende inhoud en een gewicht van bijna 7 kilo mag het boek gezien worden. Geen boek voor op de boekenplank, maar een boek dat aandacht vraagt. Een recensie van misschien wel het meest bijzondere James Bond boek ooit gepubliceerd.

It is a heavy weight. Both literally and figuratively: the book The James Bond Archives. With an unprecedented content and weighing almost 7 kilograms, the book may be seen. Not a book for the bookshelf but one that demands attention. A review of perhaps the most extraordinary James Bond book ever published.

Voor de Duitse uitgever Taschen is het eigenlijk niet zo nieuw: een boek in groot formaat. Zij zijn gespecialiseerd in het uitbrengen van grote en zware boeken. Ze maken van boeken geen informatieobjecten meer, maar kunstobjecten op zich. Zo ook The James Bond Archives, samengesteld door auteur Paul Duncan.

For German publisher Taschen, it is actually not very new: a book in a large format. They specialise in releasing large and heavy books. They no longer turn books into objects of information, but into art objects in their own right. And so is The James Bond Archives, compiled by author Paul Duncan.

Eerdere edities

Het is niet de eerste editie van The James Bond Archives. De eerste editie werd gepubliceerd ter gelegenheid van de 50e verjaardag van James Bond in 2012. Auteur Paul Duncan had twee jaar de tijd om het boek samen te stellen. In die tijd kreeg hij toegang tot het immense archief van EON Productions. Meer dan miljoenen foto’s, storyboards en andere documentatie werden geraadpleegd. En daaruit moest Duncan een keuze maken. En dat resulteerde in een boek met heel veel informatie en gepresenteerd in chronologische volgorde. Als lezer word je echt meegenomen in de creatie van een film. En met zo’n archief tot je beschikking is het bijna onvermijdelijk dat we unieke foto’s, telegramberichten uit de jaren 60 en vele andere unieke items te zien krijgen. En mede door het formaat van het boek komen de foto’s prachtig uit.

Previous editions

It is not the first edition of The James Bond Archives. The first edition was published to mark James Bond’s 50th birthday in 2012. Author Paul Duncan had two years to compile the book. During that time, he gained access to the immense archive of EON Productions. More than millions of photos, storyboards and other documentation were consulted. And from these, Duncan had to choose. And that resulted in a book with lots and lots of information and presented in chronological order. As a reader, you are really taken into the creation of a film. And with such an archive at your disposal, it is almost inevitable that we will see unique photos, telegram messages from the 1960s and many other unique items. And partly because of the format of the book, the photos come out beautifully.

Er werden ook twee gelimiteerde edities van de eerste versie van The James Bond Archives uitgegeven. Ze zijn te herkennen aan hun goudleren omslagen. De eerste speciale editie, een oplage van 250, bevatte een handtekening van Daniel Craig. De tweede speciale editie bevatte een afdruk van een decorontwerp van Sir Ken Adam.

Two limited editions of the first edition of The James Bond Archives were also published. They can be recognised by their gold leather covers. The first special edition, an edition of 250, featured an autograph by Daniel Craig. The second special edition featured a print of a set design by Sir Ken Adam.

Derde editie

Met de komst van de film Spectre werd ook een nieuwe editie van The James Bond Archives gelanceerd. En die was minder imposant dan de eerste editie. Het boek was een stuk kleiner waardoor het beter hanteerbaar was en in een boekenkast paste. Aan de inhoud was alleen de nieuwe film Spectre toegevoegd. Verder was het boek helemaal hetzelfde. Met de komst van de nieuwste James Bondfilm van Daniel Craig kondigde Taschen aan dat ze een nieuwe editie van het boek zouden uitgeven. Maar door de vertragingen in het uitbrengen van de film, werd het boek ook uitgesteld. De uitgever kondigde echter wel aan dat het boek opnieuw in groot formaat zou verschijnen en een nieuwe kleur zou krijgen. Ook werd de eerste pagina van het hoofdstuk No Time To Die vrijgegeven.

Third edition

With the arrival of the film Spectre a new edition of The James Bond Archives also launched. And it was less imposing than the first edition. The book was a lot smaller which made it more manageable and fit in a bookcase. To the contents, only the new film Spectre had been added. Other than that, the book was completely the same. With the arrival of Daniel Craig’s latest James Bond film, Taschen announced that they would publish a new edition of the book. But due to the delays in releasing the film, the book was also delayed. However, the publisher did announce that the book would once again appear in a large format and feature a new colour. It also released the first page of the No Time To Die chapter.

Recensie

Het maakt het niet minder leuk dat de nieuwe editie van The James Bond Archive een heruitgave is. Of minder indrukwekkend. Waar veel vernieuwde versies van James Bond-boeken precies hetzelfde waren, heeft Taschen gekozen voor een nieuwe, frisse look. De rode leren kaft van de eerste editie had een stijlvolle uitstraling. Maar in de nieuwe versie hebben ze het een blauwachtige tint gegeven, zoals de gebouwen in Cuba uit No Time To Die. Erg geslaagd: het boek valt veel meer op. En het boek valt zeker op. Door zijn formaat en gewicht kan het boek niet in een boekenkast worden gezet. Dus belandt het of ergens op zolder of, zoals bij mij, in de woonkamer. En dat laatste zorgt er altijd voor dat iemand die op bezoek komt erin zal bladeren. En voor mij geldt hetzelfde. Af en toe sla ik een paar bladzijden op en lees ik gewoon wat. Gewoon voor 5 minuten. Hierdoor heeft het boek een andere betekenis gekregen dan andere boeken over James Bond.

Review

It doesn’t make it any less fun that the new edition of The James Bond Archive is a reissue. Or less impressive. Whereas many updated versions of James Bond books were exactly the same, Taschen has opted for a new, fresh look. The red leather cover of the first edition had a classy look. But in the new version, they have given it a bluish hue, like the buildings in Cuba from No Time To Die. Very successful: the book stands out much more. And the book certainly does stand out. Because of its size and weight, the book simply cannot be tucked away in a bookcase. So it either ends up somewhere in the attic or, like mine, in the living room. And the latter always ensures that someone who comes to visit will always leaf through it. And the same goes for me. Every now and then save some pages and just read a bit. Just for 5 minutes. This has given the book a different meaning than other books about James Bond.

No Time To Die

Ik ben eigenlijk wel bekend met het boek The James Bond Archives. Niet dat ik het helemaal gelezen heb, maar het is zeker ook een bron van informatie voor artikelen op onze website en in ons magazine. En dus was ik vooral nieuwsgierig naar het gedeelte over de nieuwe James Bond film. Eerst bladerde ik door het hoofdstuk. De eerste indruk van een boek zijn toch vaak de plaatjes. En weer heeft Paul Duncan een mooie selectie gemaakt. Foto’s die laten zien hoe de film is gemaakt; foto’s die de actie laten zien, maar ook foto’s met emotie. Van Felix Leiter, Madeleine Swann en Mathilde.

Maar het is ook een hoofdstuk met inhoud. Net als de rest van het boek. Cary Fukunaga en producenten Michael G. Wilson en Barbara Broccoli komen aan het begin aan het woord. Ze vertellen over het ontstaan van de eerste verhaallijn, de komst van regisseur Danny Boyle en natuurlijk ook het afscheid van hem. Daar gaan Paul Duncan trouwens heel netjes mee om. Waar we natuurlijk heel erg de hoed en de rand willen weten rondom deze kwestie, houdt de auteur het oppervlakkig. Fukunaga vertelt vervolgens hoe hij bij de productie gekomen is en vooral ook hoe hij moest omgaan met de tijdsdruk. Tenslotte waren er al 5 kostbare maanden voorbij gegaan.

No Time To Die

I am actually quite familiar with the book The James Bond Archives. Not that I’ve read it in its entirety, but it’s certainly also a source of information for articles on our website and magazine. And so I was especially curious about the section on the new James Bond film. First, I flicked through the chapter. The first impression for a book is often the pictures anyway. And again, Paul Duncan has made a nice selection. Photos that show how the film was made; photos that show the action, but also photos with emotion. From Felix Leiter, Madeleine Swann and Mathilde.

But it is also a chapter with substance. Like the rest of the book. Cary Fukunaga and producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli appear at the beginning. They talk about the creation of the first storyline, the arrival of director Danny Boyle and, of course, saying goodbye to him. Paul Duncan handles that very nicely, by the way. Whereas we naturally very much want to know the ins and outs surrounding this issue, the author keeps it superficial. Fukunaga then explains how he joined the production and, more importantly, how he had to deal with the time constraints. After all, 5 precious months had already passed.

Wist je dat?

In de rest van het hoofdstuk nemen verschillende mensen van achter de schermen je mee door de productie van No Time To Die. En als je zou willen, zou je er een heel dik boek over kunnen schrijven, in detail. Maar het hoofdstuk geeft een heel goed beeld, niet te veel, maar ook zeker niet te weinig. Er komen ook veel feiten uit de productie voorbij. Wist je dat er dummy scrips in omloop waren, om het echte script verborgen te houden? Of dat Fukunaga de sterfscènes van Daniel Craig voltooide op 5 oktober: de dag dat Dr. No in première ging en we Global James Bond Day vieren? En op deze manier leest het lekker vlot, waarbij je veel te weten komt over de productie van de film. Eigenlijk net als de rest van het boek.

Did you know?

In the rest of the chapter, various people from behind the scenes take you through the production of No Time To Die. And if you wanted, you could write a whole thick book about it, in detail. But the chapter gives a very good picture, not too much, but certainly not too little either. Many facts from the production also come along. Did you know that there were dummy scrips in circulation, to keep the real script hidden? Or that Fukunaga completed Daniel Craig’s death scenes on 5 October: the day Dr. No premiered and we celebrate Global James Bond Day? And in this way, it reads nice and easy, with you finding out a lot about the production of the film. Basically just like the rest of the book.

Conclusie

Dit is een van de boeken die je op je plank moet hebben staan. Het bevat zoveel nauwkeurige informatie over de James Bond-films. Dus heb je het boek nog niet? Zoek dan zeker op verschillende verkoopsites en probeer een editie te bemachtigen voor een leuke prijs. Vooral als de laatste of de laatste twee films niet beschreven worden, is de kans dat je een exemplaar vindt erg groot en is de prijs ook nog eens leuk.

Heb je al een van de eerdere edities? Dan moet je je afvragen of een vernieuwde editie bij je past. Veel informatie rond No Time To Die is al elders te vinden en andere weetjes zijn leuk om te weten. Aan de andere kant: het boek is meer dan een boek. Het is een object om gezien te worden!

Het boek heeft een adviesprijs van €150, exclusief verzendkosten. Bij Taschen zelf is het boek (al geruime tijd) uitverkocht. En ook bij de 007Store (waar je overigens €30 meer betaalt). Maar er zijn nog wel exemplaren verkrijgbaar bij verschillende online winkels, en soms voor zeer scherpe prijzen.

Conclusion

This is one of the books I think you should have on your shelf. It contains so much accurate information about the James Bond films. So don’t have the book yet? Then be sure to search various sales websites and try to get an edition for a nice price. Especially if the last or the last two films are not described, the chances of finding a copy are very high and the price is also nice.

Do you already own one of the earlier editions? Then you should ask yourself if a revamped edition would suit you. A lot of information around No Time To Die can already be found elsewhere and other facts are nice to know. On the other hand: the book is more than a book. It is an object to be seen!

The book has a recommended retail price of €150, excluding shipping. The book has been sold out (for quite some time) at Taschen itself. And so is the 007Store (where you pay €30 more, by the way). But copies are still available at various online shops, and sometimes for very competitive prices.
