De 15e James Bond-film, The Living Daylights, markeerde niet alleen de komst van een nieuwe acteur in de rol van 007, maar ook de terugkeer van het oer-Britse automerk Aston Martin. Twee Aston Martin-modellen verschenen op het scherm. De eerste was een V8 Volante cabriolet, de persoonlijke auto van directeur Victor Gauntlett, die na een korte scène in de film door Q Branch werd “winterklaar” gemaakt met een hardtop. Nu wordt een van de gebruikte auto’s uit de film geveild bij RM Sotheby’s.
The 15th James Bond film, The Living Daylights, marked not only the arrival of a new actor in the role of 007, but also the return of the archetypal British car brand Aston Martin. Two Aston Martin models appeared on screen. The first was a V8 Volante convertible, director Victor Gauntlett’s personal car, which was “winterised” with a hardtop by Q Branch after a brief scene in the film. Now, one of the used cars from the film is being auctioned at RM Sotheby’s.
De auto in de film was een gloednieuwe, met gadgets uitgeruste, Cumberland Grey V8 Saloon coupé met zonnedak. Zo leek het althans voor de filmbezoekers. In werkelijkheid was er een flinke scheut filmmagie gebruikt. Vanwege een wachtlijst van 18 maanden kon Aston Martin EON Productions geen nieuwe V8 leveren voor de opnames. Dus zocht het productieteam een handvol Aston Martin V8’s op de tweedehandsmarkt en paste ze aan voor de opnames. De originele configuratie en staat waren niet van belang, zolang ze er op het scherm maar uitzagen als een nieuwe V8 Saloon.
The car in the film was a brand new, gadget-equipped, Cumberland Grey V8 Saloon coupe with sunroof. At least that’s how it looked to moviegoers. In reality, a dash of movie magic had been used. Due to an 18-month waiting list, Aston Martin EON Productions could not supply new cars for the shoot. So the production team sought out a handful of Aston Martin V8s on the second-hand market and modified them for the shoot. The original configuration and condition did not matter, as long as they looked like a new V8 Saloon on screen.
Auto nummer 10
De auto die ter veiling wordt aangeboden is bij EON Productions bekend als auto nummer 10. Dit is een van de vier auto’s die rijdend gebruikt is voor de opnames. De auto rolde op 27 oktober 1973 van de band en was chassisnummer V8/10596/RCA. Opmerkelijk was de kleur: Tudor Green metallic. In 1986 werd de auto gekocht door EON Productions. Het carrosserie werd aangepast om op een nieuwe model te lijken en een rolkooi werd geïnstalleerd. Daarnaast werd de motor en transmissie verwijderd om de auto lichter te maken voor de stunts in de film. Het was de bedoeling dat hij bergafwaarts zou rijden en in een sneeuwbank zou belanden aan het einde van de spannende achtervolgingsscène van de film. Een vervaagd verzendlabel op een van de ramen van de auto bevestigde dat het om ‘Car Number 10’ ging.
Car number 10
The car put up for auction is known to EON Productions as car number 10, which is one of the four cars used on the road for the filming. The car rolled off the production line on 27 October 1973 and was chassis number V8/10596/RCA. Noteworthy was its colour: Tudor Green metallic. In 1986, the car was bought by EON Productions. The bodywork was modified to resemble a new model, a roll cage was installed thick steel plates at the bottom. In addition, the engine and transmission were removed to make the car lighter for the stunts in the film. It was meant to drive downhill and end up in a snowbank at the end of the film’s thrilling chase scene. A faded shipping label on one of the car’s windows confirmed that it was EON Productions’ Car Number 10.
Na de opnames
De auto werd tot 1995 in het archief van EON Productions bewaard. Daarna werd hij, samen met de Aston Martin DB5 uit GoldenEye verkocht aan het Cars Of The Stars museum. Na 9 jaar werd deze Aston Martin aan een verzamelaar verkocht. De overige twee gingen naar Deezer in de Verenigde Staten.
De huidige eigenaar van Aston Martin V8/10596/RCA wilde de auto weer op de weg brengen. Er werd een motor met V8 en een echte ZF handgeschakelde vijfversnellingsbak gezocht en uiteindelijk opnieuw geïnstalleerd. De corrosie aan de onderkant waar nodig gerepareerd. De voorkant werd opnieuw gespoten en alle mechanische systemen werden onderhouden en gereviseerd. Een verwijderbare middenconsole met dummieschakelaars voor de gadgets en een zelfvernietigingsknop werd door de vorige eigenaar gemaakt voor tentoonstellingsdoeleinden en nog steeds bij deze auto. Tijdens de restauratie werd ook de dummy raketbooster aangepast om echte vlammen af te vuren, zodat de volgende eigenaar de James Bond-ervaring echt kan beleven.
After filming
The car was kept in the archives of EON Productions until 1995. It was then sold, along with the Aston Martin DB5 from GoldenEye and two more V8s, to Peter Nelson of the Cars Of The Stars museum. After nine years, this Aston Martin was sold to a collector. The remaining two went to Deezer in the United States.
The current owner of V8/10596/RCA wanted to get the car back on the road. A V-8 engine and a genuine ZF five-speed manual transmission were sought and eventually reinstalled. Underbody corrosion was repaired where necessary, the front end was repainted and all mechanical systems were serviced and overhauled. A removable centre console with dummy switches for the gadgets and a self-destruct button was made by the previous owner for exhibition purposes and still with this car. During the restoration, the dummy rocket booster was also modified to fire real flames, allowing the next owner to truly live the James Bond experience.
De Aston Martin V8 wordt tijdens de RM Sotheby’s Montery veiling aangeboden. De veiling vind plaat van 17 t/m 19 augustus. De verwachte opbrengst is tussen de 1,4 en 1,8 miljoen dollar.
The Aston Martin V8 will be offered during the RM Sotheby’s Montery auction. The auction takes place from 17 to 19 August. Expected profits are between $1.4 million and $1.8 million.
