De zorgvuldig gerestaureerde Mercury Cougar XR-7 uit On Her Majesty’s Secret Service staat momenteel centraal bij de Royal Automobile Club in Londen. Dit unieke exemplaar wordt getoond ter gelegenheid van de boekpresentatie van Spy Octane: The Vehicles of James Bond, Volume 1 van Matthew Field en Ajay Chowdhury.
De Royal Automobile Club (RAC) op Pall Mall zet opnieuw filmgeschiedenis in de schijnwerpers. De Cougar werd in de film bestuurd door Tracy di Vicenzo, die James Bond helpt ontsnappen tijdens een spectaculaire achtervolging over een besneeuwd Zwitsers parcours. De auto speelde een cruciale rol in het verhaal en behoort tot de zeldzame drietal Cougars die daadwerkelijk in de film werden gebruikt. Het exemplaar dat nu in de Rotunda staat, wordt gezien als de best bewaard gebleven en meest authentiek gerestaureerd exemplaar. De restauratie bracht originele details terug, waaronder de correcte kleur, interieurafwerking en rally-gerelateerde aanpassingen die voor de sneeuwscènes werden aangebracht.
De geschiedenis van deze specifieke Cougar is opmerkelijk. Na de filmopnames raakten de drie gebruikte wagens verspreid, maar dit exemplaar werd uiteindelijk teruggevonden en in ere hersteld door specialisten. Daarmee vormt zij vandaag een tastbaar en zeldzaam stuk Bond-erfgoed. Voor veel fans is het bovendien een unieke kans om een van de weinige niet-Aston Martin 007-heldenauto’s in levenden lijve te zien.
De RAC heeft een lange traditie in het tonen van Bond-auto’s. In 1969 werd er al een Aston Martin DB5 in de Rotunda geplaatst, via een spectaculaire manoeuvre waarbij de wagen door de Franse ramen op de eerste verdieping naar binnen werd gereden. In 2024 keerde een gadget-uitgeruste DB5 nog even terug.
De presentatie van de Mercury Cougar vormt nu het middelpunt van de lancering van Spy Octane: The Vehicles Of James Bond, Volume 1 van Matthew Field en Ajay Chowdhury, een boek dat de rijke geschiedenis van deze iconische filmwagens viert.

In the film, the Cougar was driven by Tracy di Vicenzo, who helps James Bond escape during a spectacular chase across snowy Swiss terrain. The car played a pivotal role in the story and is one of the rare three Cougars actually used in the film. The example now on display in the Rotunda is considered the best-preserved and most authentically restored of them all. The restoration reinstated original details, including the correct colour, interior finish, and rally-related modifications made for the snow scenes.
The history of this particular Cougar is remarkable. After filming, the three cars used were dispersed, but this example was eventually recovered and meticulously restored by specialists. Today, it represents a tangible and rare piece of Bond heritage. For many fans, it also offers a unique opportunity to see one of the few non-Aston Martin 007 hero cars in the flesh.
