Fans van James Bond en filmhistorie kunnen deze maand hun hart ophalen. Veilinghuis Sotheby’s organiseert van 5 tot en met 20 mei de online veiling Original Film Posters, met daarin een indrukwekkende selectie originele 007-posters uit de hoogtijdagen van de franchise.
De verkoop maakt deel uit van de Londense veiling “Original Film Posters” en bevat iconische affiches uit de Sean Connery-, George Lazenby en Roger Moore-jaren. Voor Bond-verzamelaars springen vooral de vroege Connery-posters eruit. Er worden meerdere exemplaren aangeboden van Dr. No. Onder de kavels bevinden zich verschillende internationale varianten van het artwork, waaronder zeldzame ontwerpen die tegenwoordig nauwelijks nog op de markt verschijnen. Ook posters van From Russia With Love en Goldfinger behoren tot de blikvangers van de veiling.
Vooral Goldfinger blijft één van de meest geliefde Bond-posters ooit gemaakt. Het klassieke artwork met Sean Connery en Shirley Eaton in goudkleurige styling groeide uit tot een cultureel icoon en bepaalde jarenlang de visuele identiteit van de franchise. Sotheby’s biedt meerdere versies aan, waaronder een zeldzame Italiaanse variant onder de titel Agente 007 Missione Goldfinger.
Ook Thunderball is sterk vertegenwoordigd. De film, waarin Bond het opneemt tegen SPECTRE en Emilio Largo, leverde destijds spectaculaire promotiecampagnes op met kleurrijke illustraties, onderwaterscènes en explosieve actiecomposities. Originele posters uit deze periode zijn bijzonder gewild bij verzamelaars, mede omdat veel affiches destijds intensief gebruikt werden in bioscopen en daardoor zelden in topstaat bewaard zijn gebleven.
De veiling laat bovendien mooi zien hoe internationaal de Bond-franchise al vanaf de jaren zestig was. Naast Britse en Amerikaanse posters worden ook Italiaanse en andere Europese ontwerpen aangeboden. Die buitenlandse varianten onderscheiden zich vaak door compleet unieke illustraties en typografieën die speciaal voor lokale markten werden ontwikkeld. Onder verzamelaars zijn deze alternatieve ontwerpen vaak nóg geliefder dan de standaard Britse quads of Amerikaanse one-sheets.
Niet alleen de Connery-jaren krijgen aandacht. Ook George Lazenby’s enige Bondfilm On Her Majesty’s Secret Service maakt deel uit van de verkoop. Daarnaast zijn er posters van Roger Moore-klassiekers als The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy en A View To A Kill. Daarmee bestrijkt de selectie ruim twintig jaar Bond-geschiedenis.
De populariteit van vintage Bond-posters blijft de afgelopen jaren toenemen. Verzamelaars waarderen vooral het handgeschilderde artwork uit de jaren zestig en zeventig, een stijl die inmiddels vrijwel verdwenen is uit moderne filmcampagnes. Online communities en verzamelaarsfora spreken regelmatig hun bewondering uit voor de klassieke illustratieve ontwerpen van films als Thunderball, You Only Live Twice en The Spy Who Loved Me.
Sotheby’s heeft al langer een sterke band met James Bond. In 2020 organiseerde het veilinghuis eerder een grote Bond-verkoop onder de naam Bond on Bond Street, waarin posters, boeken, horloges en zelfs een Aston Martin DB5 onder de hamer gingen. De nieuwe veiling sluit daar naadloos op aan en benadrukt opnieuw hoe groot de culturele én artistieke waarde van originele Bond-memorabilia inmiddels is geworden.

The sale forms part of Sotheby’s London-based Original Film Posters auction and includes iconic posters from the Sean Connery, George Lazenby and Roger Moore eras. For Bond collectors, the early Connery posters are among the standout lots. Multiple examples of Dr. No are being offered, including several international variants of the artwork, with some rare designs that seldom appear on the market today. Posters for From Russia With Love and Goldfinger are also among the highlights of the sale.
Goldfinger in particular remains one of the most celebrated Bond posters ever produced. The classic artwork featuring Sean Connery and Shirley Eaton in striking gold styling became a cultural icon and defined the visual identity of the franchise for years. Sotheby’s is offering several versions, including a rare Italian poster released under the title Agente 007 Missione Goldfinger.
Thunderball is also well represented in the auction. The film, which sees Bond facing SPECTRE and Emilio Largo, inspired spectacular promotional campaigns featuring colourful illustrations, underwater action scenes and explosive compositions. Original posters from this period are highly sought after by collectors, partly because many were heavily used in cinemas at the time and rarely survived in excellent condition.
The auction also demonstrates how international the Bond franchise had already become by the 1960s. Alongside British and American posters, Sotheby’s is offering Italian and other European designs. These foreign variants often feature completely unique artwork and typography created specifically for local markets. Among collectors, these alternative designs are frequently considered even more desirable than the standard British quads or American one-sheets.
The sale does not focus solely on the Connery years. George Lazenby’s only Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, is also included, alongside posters for Roger Moore classics such as The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy and A View To A Kill. Together, the selection spans more than twenty years of Bond history.
The popularity of vintage Bond posters has continued to grow in recent years. Collectors especially appreciate the hand-painted artwork from the 1960s and 1970s, a style that has largely disappeared from modern film campaigns. Online communities and collectors’ forums regularly express admiration for the classic illustrated designs created for films such as Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me.
Sotheby’s has maintained a strong connection with James Bond for many years.
