James Bond en een goed glas drank zijn al sinds de publicatie van Casino Royale in 1953 onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden. Van de iconische Vodka Martini tot champagne, whisky en sake: de wereld van 007 is doordrenkt van verfijnde drankcultuur. Nu verschijnt een nieuw boek van auteur Chris Distin dat deze fascinerende geschiedenis als nooit tevoren in kaart brengt.
Het luxe hardcoverwerk brengt voor het eerst iedere drank, cocktail, fles, glas en baraccessoire uit de Ian Fleming-romans en alle 25 officiële James Bond-films van EON Productions samen in één omvangrijke uitgave van bijna 500 pagina’s. Volgens Distin vergde het project meer dan twee jaar onderzoek en ruim 3.000 uur aan schrijf- en verificatiewerk.
Distin is geen onbekende binnen de Bond-gemeenschap. Eerder publiceerde hij het veelgeprezen James Bond – Golden Gun on Location, een multimediaal boek over de productie van The Man With the Golden Gun. Dat boek bevatte nooit eerder gepubliceerde foto’s van acteur Hervé Villechaize en maakte als een van de eerste Bond-uitgaven gebruik van augmented reality-technologie. Waar Golden Gun on Location zich richtte op de productiegeschiedenis van één film, zoomt zijn nieuwste project in op een onderwerp dat door de gehele Bond-canon loopt: drank. Wat begon als een persoonlijke zoektocht naar alle whisky’s die door Bond en andere personages worden gedronken, groeide uit tot een encyclopedisch overzicht van alles wat met drinken te maken heeft binnen het universum van Ian Fleming en EON Productions.
Het boek bevat niet alleen recepten en bekende cocktails, maar ook een schat aan historische informatie die volgens de auteur nooit eerder in een Bond-publicatie is onderzocht. Zo krijgen lezers antwoord op vragen als: waar komt het eerste martiniglas vandaan? Wie bedacht daadwerkelijk de beroemde Vesper Martini? En welk porseleinen servies gebruikt Bond in de romans? Bijzondere aandacht gaat uit naar de Vesper Martini, wellicht de bekendste cocktail uit de Bond-literatuur. Hoewel de drank voor het eerst verschijnt in Casino Royale en vaak uitsluitend met Bond wordt geassocieerd, heeft Distin nieuwe informatie verzameld over de werkelijke oorsprong van de cocktail en de rol die Ian Fleming daarbij speelde.
Het nieuwe boek bouwt voort op eerdere publicaties over Bond en cocktails. In Shaken: The James Bond Cocktail Book werd reeds aandacht besteed aan een selectie van Bonds bekendste drankjes, terwijl 007 On The Rocks de relatie tussen 007 en zijn favoriete cocktails verder verkende. Distins nieuwe uitgave gaat echter aanzienlijk verder door álle drankgerelateerde verwijzingen uit zowel de romans als de films systematisch te documenteren en te analyseren.
Net als bij Golden Gun on Location speelt technologie opnieuw een belangrijke rol. Via de gratis Artivive-app kunnen lezers augmented reality-content activeren. Wereldberoemde bartenders demonstreren in exclusieve video’s hoe enkele van Bonds favoriete cocktails worden bereid, terwijl aanvullende multimedia-elementen de leeservaring verrijken. Een andere opvallende toevoeging is een interactieve kaart van Londen. Hierop staan 37 bars, hotels en restaurants die Ian Fleming regelmatig bezocht. Gebruikers kunnen via hun smartphone een persoonlijke route uitstippelen langs deze historische locaties en zo letterlijk in de voetsporen van de geestelijk vader van James Bond treden.
Ook de uitvoering onderstreept het premium karakter van de publicatie. Het boek wordt gedrukt en gebonden in Duitsland en verschijnt als luxe hardcover met een lederlook omslag of optioneel een uitvoering van gerecycled echt leer. Goudkleurige embossing, HD-drukwerk en hoogwaardig papier moeten het boek niet alleen tot een naslagwerk maken, maar ook tot een verzamelobject. Volgens Distin is het doel van het boek om de meest complete referentiegids ooit samen te stellen over de drankwereld van James Bond. Gezien de omvang van het onderzoek, de vele nieuwe ontdekkingen en de innovatieve combinatie van boek en multimedia lijkt het erop dat hij die ambitie dicht heeft benaderd.

Now, a new book by author Chris Distin explores this fascinating history in unprecedented detail.
This luxury hardcover volume brings together, for the very first time, every drink, cocktail, bottle, glass and bar accessory featured in Ian Fleming’s novels and all 25 official James Bond films produced by EON Productions. According to Distin, the project required more than two years of research and over 3,000 hours of writing, fact-checking and verification.
Distin is no stranger to the Bond community. He previously published the acclaimed James Bond – Golden Gun on Location, a multimedia book exploring the production of The Man With the Golden Gun. The publication featured previously unseen photographs of actor Hervé Villechaize and was among the first Bond-related books to incorporate augmented reality technology. While Golden Gun on Location focused on the production history of a single film, Distin’s latest project examines a subject that runs throughout the entire Bond canon: drink. What began as a personal quest to identify every whisky consumed by Bond and other characters evolved into an encyclopaedic study of all things drink-related within the worlds of Ian Fleming and EON Productions.
The book not only includes recipes and well-known cocktails, but also a wealth of historical information that, according to the author, has never before been explored in a Bond publication. Readers will discover the answers to questions such as: where did the very first Martini glass originate? Who really created the famous Vesper Martini? And which porcelain tableware does Bond own in the novels? Particular attention is given to the Vesper Martini, perhaps the most famous cocktail in Bond literature. Although the drink first appeared in Casino Royale and is often associated exclusively with Bond, Distin has uncovered new information about the cocktail’s true origins and Ian Fleming’s role in its creation.
The new book builds upon earlier publications dedicated to Bond and cocktails. Shaken: The James Bond Cocktail Bookexplored a selection of Bond’s most famous drinks, while 007 On The Rocks further examined the relationship between 007 and his favourite cocktails. Distin’s latest work, however, goes considerably further by systematically documenting and analysing every drinks-related reference across both the novels and the films.
As with Golden Gun on Location, technology once again plays an important role. Through the free Artivive app, readers can activate augmented reality content. World-renowned bartenders demonstrate how to prepare some of Bond’s favourite cocktails in exclusive videos, while additional multimedia features enhance the reading experience. Another notable addition is an interactive map of London, featuring 37 bars, hotels and restaurants regularly visited by Ian Fleming. Using their smartphones, readers can create personalised routes between these historic locations and quite literally follow in the footsteps of the creator of James Bond.
The book’s production values further reinforce its premium status. Printed and bound in Germany, it will be available as a luxury hardcover edition with either a leather-look cover or an optional recycled genuine leather cover. Gold embossing, HD printing and high-quality paper combine to make the volume not only a comprehensive reference work but also a highly desirable collector’s item.
According to Distin, the aim of the book is to create the most complete reference guide ever published on the drinking world of James Bond. Given the scale of the research, the many new discoveries and the innovative combination of book and multimedia, it appears he has come very close to achieving that goal.
