Award-winning British comic book writer Grant Morrison is set to write a new James Bond comic series for IDW Publishing. The first story arc, Sunbreaker, will span six issues and promises a fresh take on the world of 007, featuring new gadgets, cars and a terrifying adversary.
Ian Fleming Publications Ltd and IDW Publishing are joining forces to create a new series of original comic book stories featuring James Bond. At the helm is Grant Morrison, one of the most influential writers in the international comic book industry. Morrison will have the opportunity to develop their own vision of James Bond.
The collaboration offers new opportunities to explore the world of 007. According to Ian Fleming Publications, some stories are particularly well suited to being told in comic book form. IDW convinced the rights holders with a vision that respects the established Bond mythology while also making room for innovation. Amanda Douglas, Managing Director of Ian Fleming Publications, is enthusiastic about the partnership. From the earliest conversations, she said, it was clear that IDW shared the same ambitions for Bond and respected Fleming’s original creation. She looks forward to seeing the direction Morrison and IDW will take the new series.
Sunbreaker: Six Issues of Intrigue and Danger
The first story arc is entitled Sunbreaker and will comprise six issues. Morrison aims to bring together the elements Bond fans love while introducing new situations, adversaries and perspectives. A James Bond fan since childhood, the writer regards the opportunity to put their own stamp on a character with a cultural standing comparable to that of King Arthur, Robin Hood and Sherlock Holmes as one too good to miss.
In Sunbreaker, Bond operates in a world that closely resembles our own, but where reality is reflected as if in a distorted mirror. Intrigue, violence, double-crosses and deception form the backbone of the story. Bond is portrayed as a charismatic, ruthless and virtually unstoppable secret agent. The familiar Bond ingredients are also present. Morrison promises new cars, advanced gadgets and a particularly terrifying main villain seemingly ripped straight from the headlines. Exactly who Bond will face, and what roles the new vehicles and technological innovations will play, have yet to be revealed.
A New Future for Bond in Comics
For IDW, the partnership reflects its ambition not merely to expand established franchises, but also to approach them in innovative ways. CEO Davidi Jonas emphasises that the publisher aims to create stories that remain true to the defining qualities of a franchise while embracing the modern comic book landscape. Simon Ward, Publishing Director at Ian Fleming Publications, also sees considerable potential in the collaboration. Bond, he notes, has an impressive legacy spanning books, films, video games and comics. Each medium offers its own opportunities to develop the character further.
No further details have yet been announced regarding the release date, other members of the creative team or the format of Sunbreaker. Plans for additional Bond comics from IDW will also be revealed at a later date.
