The young James Bond returns to the place where he spent a significant part of his formative years. Ahead of the upcoming audio adaptation of SilverFin, the first book in Charlie Higson’s Young Bond series, lead actor Isaac Rouse was photographed at the historic Eton College. Wearing an authentic 1930s school uniform, the actor brings the young Bond to life, long before he becomes the famous British secret agent.

The Big Finish Productions team took Isaac Rouse to Eton College to familiarise him with the surroundings in which the young James Bond spent a significant part of his schooldays. The visit also provided an opportunity for a special photoshoot, with Rouse dressed in the period-appropriate uniform of a so-called ‘lower boy’.

According to producer Robert Valentine, it was clear from an early stage that a photoshoot at Eton would be the ideal way to present the new production. It was also a fortunate coincidence that Rouse was not only ideally suited to the role vocally, but also bore a striking resemblance to Ian Fleming’s vision of James Bond.

Writer and director Barnaby Edwards was initially less optimistic about the idea. Finding the right costume, securing permission from Eton College and organising the photoshoot at one specific location on a particular day all seemed like considerable challenges. Nevertheless, everything fell into place. The resulting photographs provided an important visual foundation for the audio release’s packaging and promotional materials.

A glimpse into Bond’s formative years

Eton College is more than just a historical backdrop in the story of SilverFin. Bond’s schooldays play an important role in shaping the young James Bond. Images of Rouse in his uncomfortable school uniform, surrounded by the buildings where Bond received his education, highlight the contrast between the strict school environment and the independent spirit that would come to define the future secret agent.

Producer Lizzie Worsdell describes the photoshoot as one of the highlights of the production. Costume designer Savannah Blum managed to source a historically accurate uniform, convincingly bringing the world of SilverFin to life. The cooperation of Eton College was also essential in making the shoot at this remarkable location possible.
