Big Finish
Charlie Higson, the author of the Young Bond novels, takes on a special role in the new audio adaptation of Young Bond: SilverFin. Higson himself will voice Michael Merriot, James Bond’s classics tutor at Eton College. The full audio adaptation will be released by Big Finish Productions in October 2026.
With Higson joining the cast, SilverFin has a direct connection to the original Young Bond series. Higson wrote SilverFin, which was published in 2005 as the first novel in the Young Bond series. More than twenty years later, he returns to his own story for the new production, this time as a voice actor. In SilverFin, the young James Bond meets Michael Merriot, a classics tutor at Eton College. Merriot is a kind and intelligent teacher, but he also has secrets of his own. He develops a special bond with Bond and becomes an important mentor figure to the young pupil.
“It’s a lot of fun revisiting the book more than twenty years after I first wrote it, and reading the scripts and thinking, ‘Oh, this is good,’” said Higson. “And it’s great to be involved in this way, playing a character who develops throughout the series. Bond arrives at school as an orphan, and Merriot becomes an alternative father figure who takes an interest in his life.”
As well as being an author, Higson is an actor and comedian. He was a co-creator and one of the stars of the hugely successful British comedy series The Fast Show. He is also the author of the horror series The Enemy and five adult crime novels. According to producer Robert Valentine, Higson was an obvious choice for the role of Merriot. “Not only because, as the author of the series, we felt his involvement would give the whole endeavour an extra sense of legitimacy, but also because Charlie is a marvellous actor and it would have been foolish not to cast him somewhere,” said Valentine.
Writer and director Barnaby Edwards was equally convinced that Higson was the right choice. According to Edwards, their meeting came about more or less by chance. While recording an episode of Doctor Who at the Soundhouse, Higson happened to be recording another production at the same studio. He was approached about the role during the lunch break.“He’s the perfect Merriot and we’re so lucky to have him as Bond’s mentor in the production,” said Edwards.
Young Bond: SilverFin consists of sixteen episodes, each approximately half an hour long, making a total of around eight hours of full-cast audio drama. Isaac Rouse voices James Bond, while Charlotte McBurney plays Wilder Lawless. The production is directed by Barnaby Edwards and produced by Robert Valentine and Lizzie Worsdell. Valentine also serves as script editor, while John Ainsworth is the senior producer.
Young Bond: SilverFin will be available from October through Big Finish and the Ian Fleming Shop. As part of Big Finish’s digital-first release schedule, customers will be able to download or listen to the digital version immediately from the release date via the Big Finish app. The physical collector’s edition CDs will be dispatched at a later date.
The original SilverFin novel by Charlie Higson is also available through Big Finish. For fans who want to experience both versions, bundles combining the novel with both volumes of the audio adaptation are also available.
