Hoewel hij niet beschikt over gadgets of brute pk’s, speelt het bescheiden Franse autootje een hoofdrol in een van de spannendste achtervolgingen uit de James Bond-serie. Agora Models brengt deze klassieker nu uit als een gedetailleerd schaalmodel, speciaal voor verzamelaars en Bond-liefhebbers. In deze recensie voor Bondesque Magazine bekijken we de bouwkwaliteit, nauwkeurigheid en afwerking van dit indrukwekkende model en beoordelen we of het een waardige toevoeging is aan iedere 007-collectie.

The iconic yellow Citroën 2CV from For Your Eyes Only ranks among the most memorable Bond cars of all time. Although it lacks high-tech gadgets and outright horsepower, this humble French runabout takes centre stage in one of the most exhilarating chase sequences in the James Bond series. Agora Models has now recreated this classic as a highly detailed scale model, aimed specifically at collectors and Bond enthusiasts. In this review for Bondesque Magazine, we take a closer look at the model’s build quality, accuracy and finish to determine whether it deserves a place in every 007 collection.

De Citroën 2CV werd in 1948 geïntroduceerd als een betaalbare en praktische auto voor het Franse platteland. Citroën ontwierp de 2CV met een helder doel: een eenvoudige, betrouwbare auto bouwen die twee boeren, een mand eieren en een zak aardappelen comfortabel over onverharde wegen kon vervoeren zonder de eieren te breken. Dankzij zijn luchtgekoelde tweecilindermotor, lange veerwegen en minimalistische constructie groeide de 2CV uit tot een van de meest herkenbare auto’s uit de twintigste eeuw. Uiteindelijk werden er meer dan vijf miljoen exemplaren geproduceerd, waarmee de “Lelijke Eend” een geliefd icoon werd van eenvoud en functionaliteit.

Hoewel de 2CV nooit bedoeld was als sportwagen, kreeg hij een onverwachte hoofdrol in de James Bond-film For Your Eyes Only. In de film raakt Bond zijn Lotus Esprit kwijt wanneer deze wordt vernietigd. Samen met Melina Havelock vlucht hij vervolgens in een felgele Citroën 2CV, die al snel wordt achtervolgd door gewapende tegenstanders in veel krachtigere Peugeot 504-sedans.

De spectaculaire achtervolging werd opgenomen op het Griekse eiland Corfu en over verschillende smalle bergwegen en landelijke routes. Juist het contrast tussen de bescheiden 2CV en de veel snellere achtervolgers maakt de scène zo memorabel. De auto helt dramatisch over in de bochten, stuitert over onverharde paden en laat zien dat wendbaarheid soms belangrijker is dan pure snelheid. Om de intensieve stunts mogelijk te maken werden meerdere speciaal geprepareerde 2CV’s ingezet, voorzien van aangepaste ophanging en krachtigere motoren om het hoge tempo tijdens de opnames vol te houden.

De populariteit van de film leidde zelfs tot een bijzondere samenwerking tussen Citroën en de producenten. Kort na de bioscooprelease verscheen de speciale 2CV 007-uitvoering, herkenbaar aan de gele lak en decoratieve kogelgaten op de carrosserie. Daarmee werd de bescheiden Franse klassieker definitief onderdeel van de rijke geschiedenis van James Bond.

The Citroën 2CV was introduced in 1948 as an affordable and practical car for rural France. It was designed with a clear purpose in mind: to provide a simple, reliable vehicle capable of transporting two farmers, a basket of eggs and a sack of potatoes across rough, unpaved roads without breaking the eggs. Thanks to its air-cooled two-cylinder engine, exceptionally supple suspension and minimalist design, the 2CV became one of the most recognisable cars of the twentieth century. By the end of its production run, more than five million examples had been built, earning the quirky French classic a lasting reputation as an icon of simplicity and practicality.

Although the 2CV was never intended to be a performance car, it found an unexpected starring role in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only. Early in the film, Bond loses his Lotus Esprit when it is destroyed, forcing him and Melina Havelock to escape in a bright yellow Citroën 2CV. Before long, they are pursued by armed assailants driving far more powerful Peugeot 504 saloons.

The memorable chase sequence was filmed on the Greek island of Corfu, making full use of its narrow mountain roads and rural tracks. The contrast between the humble 2CV and its much faster pursuers is precisely what makes the scene so entertaining. Leaning dramatically through corners, bouncing across rough terrain and squeezing through impossibly tight spaces, the little Citroën proves that agility can sometimes triumph over outright speed. To cope with the demanding stunt work, several specially prepared 2CVs were used during filming, fitted with uprated suspension and more powerful engines to withstand the punishing pace of production.

The film’s success even resulted in a unique collaboration between Citroën and the Bond franchise. Shortly after the film’s release, Citroën introduced the special-edition 2CV 007, finished in the same distinctive yellow paint and decorated with faux bullet holes to replicate the movie car. It cemented the unassuming French classic’s place in James Bond history and remains one of the most distinctive promotional tie-ins ever produced for a Bond film.

De eerste indruk is, net als bij eerdere modellen van Agora Models, uitstekend. Alle onderdelen zijn netjes verpakt in afzonderlijke papieren enveloppen, een milieuvriendelijke keuze die bovendien voorkomt dat onderdelen tijdens transport beschadigen. Opvallend is dat ook alle schroeven voor het volledige model al in dit eerste pakket worden meegeleverd. Ze zijn overzichtelijk gesorteerd in gelabelde papieren enveloppen, zodat je gedurende de hele bouwserie altijd de juiste bevestigingsmaterialen bij de hand hebt. Dat betekent wel dat je vooraf even goed moet uitzoeken welke schroeven je nodig hebt voordat je aan een bouwstap begint. Waar eerdere modellen ruim waren voorzien van reserveschroeven, is het nog afwachten hoe dat bij de Citroën 2CV uitpakt. Op basis van onze ervaring met de twee Aston Martins en de Lotus Esprit van Agora Models verwachten we echter weinig problemen; tijdens de bouw gingen er nauwelijks schroeven verloren.

De bouwkwaliteit is precies wat we inmiddels van Agora Models mogen verwachten. We moeten oppassen niet in herhaling te vallen, maar de afwerking is opnieuw van hoog niveau. De metalen carrosseriedelen zijn strak afgewerkt en de kleinere kunststof onderdelen zijn scherp gedetailleerd. Bovendien zijn alle onderdelen al in kleur gespoten, waardoor de nadruk volledig op het bouwen ligt – een van de sterke punten van Agora Models.

Tijdens de eerste vijf bouwstappen monteer je onder meer het linker voorwiel, een deel van de karakteristieke tweecilinder boxermotor, de grille en de kentekenplaat. Ook maak je kennis met een van de leukste details van het model: het frame van de kenmerkende hangmatstoel, compleet met een elastische zitting zoals bij de echte 2CV. Daarmee laat Agora direct zien hoeveel aandacht is besteed aan authenticiteit.

De stap-voor-stap fotohandleiding maakt iedere bouwstap eenvoudig te volgen, waardoor zowel ervaren modelbouwers als beginners probleemloos aan de slag kunnen. Zoals bij iedere bouwserie is Pack 1 vooral bedoeld als kennismaking, maar de hoge afwerkingskwaliteit, de doordachte verpakking en de aandacht voor filmgetrouwe details maken direct nieuwsgierig naar de volgende leveringen.

The first impression is, just as with previous models from Agora Models, excellent. All of the parts are neatly packaged in individual paper envelopes, an environmentally friendly choice that also helps protect the components during transit. One particularly noteworthy feature is that all of the screws required for the entire build are included in this very first pack. They are clearly organised in labelled paper envelopes, ensuring you have the correct fixings to hand throughout the build. It does, however, mean that you’ll need to spend a little time identifying the correct screws before starting each assembly stage. Previous Agora Models releases included generous quantities of spare screws, so it remains to be seen whether that will be the case with the Citroën 2CV. Based on our experience building the two Aston Martins and the Lotus Esprit, however, we don’t expect this to present any real issues, as very few screws were lost during those projects.

The build quality is exactly what we have come to expect from Agora Models. We risk repeating ourselves, but once again the standard of finish is excellent. The metal body panels are beautifully finished, while the smaller plastic components are crisply detailed. All parts come pre-painted, allowing builders to focus entirely on the assembly process – one of Agora Models’ greatest strengths.

The first five assembly stages include building the left front wheel, part of the distinctive twin-cylinder boxer engine, the front grille and the number plate. Builders are also introduced to one of the model’s most charming features: the frame of the iconic hammock-style seat, complete with its elasticated seat base, just like the real 2CV. It’s a detail that immediately demonstrates the care Agora Models has taken to reproduce the original vehicle as faithfully as possible.

The step-by-step, photo-illustrated instructions are clear and easy to follow, making the model suitable for both experienced builders and newcomers alike. As with any partwork series, Pack 1 is primarily intended as an introduction, but its excellent build quality, thoughtful packaging and attention to screen-accurate detail leave you eager to continue with the next instalments.
