Twintig jaar na Casino Royale keert opnieuw een iconische outfit uit Daniel Craigs Bond-debuut terug. Na de eerder aangekondigde Madagascar Shirt en Trousers presenteren Anthony Sinclair en Academy Costumes nu de First Kill Suit en het bijpassende First Kill Shirt. Net als bij de eerdere heruitgave is daarbij gebruikgemaakt van de originele productiegegevens uit 2006.
De donkerblauwe linnen suit is afkomstig uit een van de meest memorabele momenten van Casino Royale. In de zwart-wit openingssequentie probeert Bond zijn 00-status te verdienen door twee moorden te plegen. De eerste vindt plaats in het toilet van een cricketclub in Lahore, waar hij het gevecht aangaat met contactpersoon Fisher. Voor de scène droeg Craig een relatief informeel donkerblauw linnen pak, dat speciaal voor de productie werd vervaardigd door Academy Costumes.
Terug naar de originele patronen
Voor de nieuwe First Kill Suit zijn Anthony Sinclair en Academy Costumes opnieuw teruggekeerd naar het originele productiemateriaal. De recreatie is dus niet gebaseerd op foto’s of een kostuum dat achteraf is opgemeten, maar op de oorspronkelijke patronen en cutting notes die twintig jaar geleden voor Casino Royale werden gebruikt. Daarmee sluit de nieuwe uitgave rechtstreeks aan op de productiemethode van de film.
Het pak is gemaakt van 265 gram per vierkante meter zwaar puur linnen. Het ongeconstrueerde jasje heeft een relatief hoog sluitende constructie met twee knopen, manchetten met vier knopen, dubbele splitten en open opgestikte zakken. De bijpassende broek heeft een vlakke voorkant, rechte pijpen en een eenvoudige zoom. Een interessant detail uit de productiearchieven is dat er destijds maar liefst 26 exemplaren van het pak werden gemaakt voor Daniel Craig en zijn stuntman. Dat grote aantal was noodzakelijk vanwege de intensieve vechtscène en de verschillende opnames die daarvoor nodig waren.
Een opvallend shirt
Minstens zo interessant is het shirt dat onder het pak wordt gedragen. Anthony Sinclair heeft voor het eerst ook het First Kill Shirt gereproduceerd. Het lichtblauwe shirt is gemaakt van zeer licht 110 g/m² puur linnen, waarbij blauwe en witte garens zijn gebruikt om de kenmerkende hemelsblauwe kleur te creëren. Het shirt beschikt over dezelfde hoge two-button spread collar, voorpand en korte mouwen als het origineel.
Juist die korte mouwen maken het shirt bijzonder. Een overhemd met korte mouwen onder een kostuum is binnen de klassieke herenkleding ongebruikelijk, maar past uitstekend bij de jonge en fysiekere Bond die in Casino Royale wordt geïntroduceerd. Er is bovendien een interessante link met Ian Fleming: Fleming droeg zelf regelmatig overhemden met korte mouwen en liet ook zijn literaire Bond in warme omstandigheden dergelijke shirts dragen.
De First Kill Suit en Shirt vormen de tweede samenwerking tussen Anthony Sinclair en Academy Costumes ter gelegenheid van de twintigste verjaardag van Casino Royale, na de eerder dit jaar verschenen Madagascar-outfit. Daarmee wordt langzaam een steeds groter deel van Daniel Craigs eerste Bond-film opnieuw beschikbaar voor liefhebbers die niet alleen de uitstraling, maar ook de oorspronkelijke constructie van de kostuums willen benaderen.
De First Kill Suit kost £1.150, terwijl het bijpassende shirt voor £295 wordt aangeboden. Beide worden op bestelling gemaakt, met een verwachte levertijd van vier tot vijf weken.

Twenty years after Casino Royale, another iconic outfit from Daniel Craig’s Bond debut is making a return. Following the previously announced Madagascar Shirt and Trousers, Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes are now presenting the First Kill Suit and matching First Kill Shirt. As with the earlier reissue, the recreation draws on the original production records from 2006.
The dark blue linen suit comes from one of the most memorable moments in Casino Royale. In the black-and-white opening sequence, Bond attempts to earn his 00 status by carrying out two kills. The first takes place in the lavatory of a cricket club in Lahore, where he confronts his contact, Fisher. For the scene, Craig wore a relatively informal dark blue linen suit, specially made for the production by Academy Costumes.
Returning to the original patterns
For the new First Kill Suit, Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes have once again returned to the original production materials. The recreation is therefore not based on photographs or a costume that was measured retrospectively, but on the original patterns and cutting notes used for Casino Royale twenty years ago. The new release therefore follows the same production methods used for the film.
The suit is made from 265 gsm pure linen. The unstructured jacket features a relatively high two-button fastening, four-button cuffs, double vents and open patch pockets. The matching trousers have a flat front, straight legs and a plain hem. An interesting detail from the production archives is that no fewer than 26 versions of the suit were made for Daniel Craig and his stunt double. The large number was necessary because of the intensive fight sequence and the numerous takes required to film it.
A distinctive shirt
Just as interesting is the shirt worn beneath the suit. For the first time, Anthony Sinclair has also recreated the First Kill Shirt. The light blue shirt is made from exceptionally lightweight 110 gsm pure linen, using blue and white yarns to create its distinctive sky-blue colour. The shirt features the same high two-button spread collar, front and short sleeves as the original.
It is precisely those short sleeves that make the shirt so distinctive. A short-sleeved shirt worn under a suit is unusual in traditional menswear, but works particularly well for the younger, more physical Bond introduced in Casino Royale. There is also an interesting connection with Ian Fleming: Fleming himself regularly wore short-sleeved shirts and also dressed his literary Bond in them in warmer climates.
The First Kill Suit and First Kill Shirt mark the second collaboration between Anthony Sinclair and Academy Costumes to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Casino Royale, following the Madagascar outfit released earlier this year. With these releases, an increasing number of pieces from Daniel Craig’s first Bond film are once again becoming available to enthusiasts who want to recreate not only the look, but also the original construction of the costumes.
The First Kill Suit is priced at £1,150, while the matching shirt is available for £295. Both are made to order, with an expected lead time of four to five weeks.
