Sindsdien leverde het Londense huis kleding voor verschillende Bondfilms, waaronder Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day en Casino Royale.
Twenty years after the premiere of Casino Royale, Turnbull & Asser returns to one of the most iconic sartorial moments in modern Bond history. The British shirtmaker has introduced a new ten-piece Casino Royale Collection, reinterpreting James Bond’s classic eveningwear for the modern 007.
The relationship between Turnbull & Asser and James Bond dates back to Dr. No in 1962. Since then, the London-based house has supplied clothing for several Bond films, including Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day and Casino Royale. As a result, Turnbull & Asser has become one of the most recognisable British names associated with 007’s wardrobe. For Casino Royale, Turnbull & Asser supplied, among other items, the distinctive white dress shirt and black Shantung silk bow tie worn by Daniel Craig as Bond. The dinner suit itself was supplied by Brioni. The new collection is therefore not intended as an exact reproduction of Craig’s original outfit. Instead, Turnbull & Asser has considered what Bond might wear at the Casino Royale poker table today.
The result is an eveningwear collection comprising ten pieces, with the centrepiece being a Midnight Blue cotton velvet dinner jacket featuring silk satin lapels. The matching trousers are made from fine wool and finished with a satin stripe. The ensemble deliberately moves away from the traditional black dinner suit seen in the film, while remaining firmly rooted in classic black-tie dress. The choice of Midnight Blue is more than simply a change of colour. It is a signature Turnbull & Asser shade and, according to the house, gives the traditional black-tie look greater depth and character. The collection is completed by a white cotton dress shirt, Midnight Blue silk bow tie, cummerbund, braces and long socks. The shirt features a pleated front, with alternating wide and narrow pleats referencing Turnbull & Asser’s distinctive Double Stripe.
Particularly noteworthy are the three silk pocket squares, each containing subtle references to events in Casino Royale. One design is inspired by playing cards, while a second centres on Bond’s winning straight flush. The third pocket square combines a crown with an open laurel branch, symbolising royalty, victory and a story that has yet to reach its conclusion. The symbolism only becomes apparent when the pocket square is folded correctly.
This is where the strength of the collection lies. Much like the film itself, Turnbull & Asser is not simply looking back to the past. Casino Royale gave James Bond a fresh start in 2006 as a younger, tougher and less polished agent. The new collection takes a similar approach to his wardrobe: it respects the classic Bond codes while translating them for a new generation.
The prices reflect the exclusive nature of the collection. The Midnight Blue dinner jacket is priced at £2,195, while the matching trousers cost £895. The silk pocket squares start at £110, with the socks priced from £37.
