Samen met het nieuws dat Amazon MGM Studios mede-eigenaar wordt van de intellectuele eigendomsrechten van de James Bond films, hebben Michael Wilson en Barbara aangegeven dat ze een stap terug doen.
Michael Wilson kondigt in een verklaring aan dat hij helemaal stopt met zijn functie als producent bij EON Productions. De 83-jarige Wilson laat in een verklaring weten: “Met mijn 007-carrière die bijna zestig ongelooflijke jaren beslaat, trek ik me terug uit de productie van de James Bond-films om mij te concentreren op kunst en liefdadigheidsprojecten. Daarom zijn Barbara en ik het erover eens dat het tijd is voor onze vertrouwde partner, Amazon MGM Studios, om James Bond de toekomst in te helpen.“
Wilson begon officieel bij EON Productions op de juridische afdeling in het begin van de jaren 70. Voor de film Moonraker werd hij uitvoerend producent en vervolgens produceerde hij de films samen met Albert R. Broccoli en later zijn dochter Barabara Broccoli. Wilson bleek een duizendpoot: naast zijn werk als producent was hij samen met Richard Maibaum verantwoordelijk voor de scripts van alle James Bondfilms. Binnen de James Bond gemeenschap kennen we de uitdrukking Where Is Wilson: hij verscheen in 17 James Bond films met een cameo.
Terwijl Michael Wilson in een verklaring aangaf helemaal terug te trekken uit EON Productions ligt dat voor Barbara Broccoli anders. Uit de verklaring van Amazon MGM Studios en EON Productions is er nog heel veel ruimte hoe haar rol binnen het bedrijf eruit gaat zien. Broccoli laat in de verklaring weten: “Mijn leven is gewijd aan het voortzetten van de buitengewone erfenis die Michael en ik van onze vader, producer Cubby Broccoli, hebben gekregen. Ik heb de eer gehad om nauw samen te werken met vier van de enorm getalenteerde acteurs die 007 hebben gespeeld en met duizenden geweldige mensen uit de industrie. Nu No Time To Die is afgerond en Michael zich terugtrekt uit de films, vind ik dat het tijd is om me op mijn andere projecten te richten.”
Barbara Broccoli kwam op haar 17 bij EON Productions te werken bij de publiciteitsafdeling voor de film The Spy Who Loved Me. In 1983 werd ze Assistant Director en Associate Producer van de Timothy Dalton films. In 1995 nam zij, samen met Michael Wilson, het stokje over van Albert R. Broccoli om de films te produceren. De laatste zin in het persbericht geeft aan dat 64-jarige Broccoli wel verbonden blijft aan EON Productions, maar dat ze vanuit die rol ook andere projecten kan gaan opzetten. Recentelijk werd bekend dat Broccoli rechten van een boek heeft gekocht om die te verfilmen.
Along with the news that Amazon MGM Studios will co-own the intellectual property rights to the James Bond films, Michael Wilson and Barbara have indicated that they are stepping back.
Michael Wilson announced in a statement that he is stepping down from his role as producer at EON Productions altogether. The 83-year-old Wilson reveals in a statement, “With my 007 career spanning nearly sixty incredible years, I am stepping back from producing the James Bond films to focus on art and charitable projects. Therefore, Barbara and I agree, it is time for our trusted partner, Amazon MGM Studios, to lead James Bond into the future,”
Wilson officially started at EON Productions in the legal department in the early 1970s. For the film Moonraker, he became executive producer and then produced the films with Albert R. Broccoli and later his daughter Barabara Broccoli. Wilson proved to be a jack-of-all-trades: in addition to his work as a producer, he was responsible for the scripts of all James Bond films together with Richard Maibaum. While Michael Wilson announced in a statement that he is completely stepping down from EON Productions, that is different for Barbara Broccoli. From the statement from Amazon MGM Studios and EON Productions, there is still a lot of open space as to what her role within the company will look like. Broccoli reveals in the statement, ‘My life has been dedicated to maintaining and building upon the extraordinary legacy that was handed to Michael and me by our father, producer Cubby Broccoli. I have had the honour of working closely with four of the tremendously talented actors who have played 007 and thousands of wonderful artists within the industry. With the conclusion of No Time To Die and Michael retiring from the films, I feel it is time to focus on my other projects.’
