Eerder dit jaar werd bekend dat de producenten van de James Bond-films een stap terugdoen en dat het intellectuele eigendom is ondergebracht bij Amazon MGM Studios. Nu lijkt er opnieuw een belangrijke ontwikkeling te zijn: de opkomst van een nieuwe entiteit genaamd London Operations LLC.
Oplettende Bond-liefhebbers merkten dit voor het eerst op bij de aankondiging van de heruitgave van de Thunderball-soundtrack door La-La Land Records. Onderaan de promotie-afbeelding stond: “JAMES BOND, 007, and related James Bond copyrights and/or trademarks authorized for use by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., exclusive licensee of London Operations LLC. © 2025 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. All Rights Reserved.” Opvallend: Danjaq LLC, sinds de jaren ’60 houder van de James Bond-licenties, werd niet genoemd. Ook op andere website van officiële James Bond-producten ontbreekt de naam volledig.
Hoewel er nog geen officiële bevestiging is, wijst alles erop dat London Operations LLC een strategische opvolger of zusterfirma is van Danjaq LLC. Volgens openbare documenten is het bedrijf gevestigd op hetzelfde adres als Amazon MGM Studios in Culver City, Californië. Of er sprake is van eigendom of alleen nauwe samenwerking met Amazon/MGM blijft vooralsnog onduidelijk.
Wat wel vaststaat: op 26 augustus 2025 diende London Operations LLC een merkaanvraag in bij het European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) voor het wereldberoemde merk “007” (aanvraagnummer 019237541). De aanvraag dekt niet alleen film en merchandise, maar ook brede diensten in transport, reizen, software en videogames. Het bedrijf dat de aanvragen heeft gedaan, het wereldwijde juristenkantoor Taylor Wessing, is sinds begin deze maand ook toegevoegd als wettelijk vertegenwoordiger van Danjaq LCC. Kort na de aanvraag werd ook het merk “007 First Light” door London Operations LCC geregistreerd, vermoedelijk gelinkt aan een aankomende game. Opmerkelijk is dat op dit moment bij het nieuwe spel nog wel Danjaq LLC als rechthebbende wordt genoemd — maar voor hoelang is de vraag.
Danjaq LLC werd in 1962 opgericht door Albert R. Broccoli en Harry Saltzman, en beheerde decennialang alle James Bond-rechten. Nu lijkt het bedrijf, nog altijd geleid door Michael G. Wilson, langzaam plaats te maken voor een nieuwe structuur. Of dit het einde betekent van Danjaq’s rol binnen de Bond-franchise is nog onduidelijk. Maar dat er iets verandert in de licentie- en merkstrategie rond 007, staat vast.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the long-time producers of the James Bond films were stepping back, and that the franchise’s intellectual property had been transferred to Amazon MGM Studios. Now, a new development has surfaced: the emergence of a company named London Operations LLC.
Eagle-eyed Bond fans first spotted the change in the announcement of the re-release of the Thunderball soundtrack by La-La Land Records. At the bottom of the promotional artwork, the following line appeared: “JAMES BOND, 007, and related James Bond copyrights and/or trademarks authorised for use by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc., exclusive licensee of London Operations LLC. © 2025 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. All Rights Reserved.” Notably absent was Danjaq LLC, the company that has held the Bond rights since the 1960s. Its name is also missing from several other official James Bond product websites.
Although there has been no formal confirmation, all signs suggest that London Operations LLC is a strategic successor or affiliate of Danjaq LLC. Public records show that the company is registered at the same address as Amazon MGM Studios in Culver City, California. However, it remains unclear whether there is direct ownership, or simply a close licensing relationship.
What is certain is that on 26 August 2025, London Operations LLC filed a trademark application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for the world-famous brand “007” (application number 019237541). The application covers not only films and merchandise, but also a wide range of services in transport, travel, software and video games. The company that filed the applications, the global law firm Taylor Wessing, was also added as the legal representative of Danjaq LCC at the beginning of this month. Shortly after the application, the trademark ‘007 First Light’ was also registered by London Operations LCC, presumably linked to an upcoming game. It is noteworthy that Danjaq LLC is still listed as the rights holder for the new game at this time — but for how long is the question.
Danjaq LLC was founded in 1962 by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, and has overseen all official Bond rights and productions for decades. The company, still led by Michael G. Wilson, may now be transitioning its licensing role to London Operations LLC. Whether this marks the end of Danjaq’s involvement in the franchise remains to be seen. But it’s clear that a shift is underway in the management and licensing of the 007 brand.
