De avonturen van een jonge James Bond krijgen dit najaar een nieuwe dimensie. Ian Fleming Publications en Big Finish Productions brengen Young Bond: SilverFin uit als een grootschalig, volledig ingesproken audiodrama. Voor verzamelaars en liefhebbers zijn verschillende uitvoeringen beschikbaar voor pre-order, van een digitale editie tot zeer gelimiteerde collector’s editions.
Het audiodrama is gebaseerd op SilverFin, de eerste Young Bond-roman van Charlie Higson, die oorspronkelijk in 2005 verscheen. Het verhaal speelt zich af tijdens Bonds jeugdjaren en volgt de dertienjarige James tijdens zijn eerste periode op Eton College. Een mysterieuze verdwijning leidt hem uiteindelijk naar Schotland, waar hij betrokken raakt bij een gevaarlijk geheim rond Loch SilverFin.
Zestien afleveringen
De nieuwe productie bestaat uit zestien afleveringen van ieder ongeveer een half uur, goed voor in totaal circa acht uur luisterplezier. Het verhaal wordt verdeeld over twee delen van elk ongeveer vier uur. De productie wordt uitgebracht als een zogenoemd full-cast audio drama, waarbij verschillende acteurs de personages vertolken. Daarmee gaat de productie verder dan een traditioneel luisterboek waarin één verteller het volledige verhaal voorleest.
De rol van de jonge James Bond wordt gespeeld door Isaac Rouse, terwijl Charlotte McBurney de stem van Wilder Lawless voor haar rekening neemt. Voor de rol van Bond werd uitgebreid gezocht: meer dan vijfhonderd kandidaten stuurden een auditie in, waarna twaalf acteurs werden uitgenodigd voor een studiocasting. Uiteindelijk werd Rouse gekozen als de stem van de jonge geheimagent.
Een nieuwe stem voor Young Bond
Volgens schrijver en regisseur Barnaby Edwards sluit Rouses interpretatie nauw aan bij de Bond zoals die in de boeken van Fleming en Higson wordt beschreven. Niet de onverslaanbare geheimagent die het publiek uit de films kent, maar een jonge Bond die tegelijkertijd intelligent, vastberaden, kwetsbaar en nieuwsgierig is. Edwards bewerkte de roman bovendien voor audio en regisseerde de productie. Robert Valentine is script editor en producent, samen met Lizzie Worsdell. De muziek is afkomstig van Joe Kraemer, terwijl Nicholas Briggs en Jason Haigh-Ellery als executive producers betrokken zijn.
Digitale edities
Voor luisteraars die vooral geïnteresseerd zijn in de audio zelf, zijn er twee afzonderlijke digitale edities. Part 1 en Part 2 duren elk 240 minuten en zijn afzonderlijk verkrijgbaar voor £24,99. Beide delen worden digitaal geleverd en kunnen na aanschaf worden gedownload. De officiële releasedatum staat momenteel gepland op 29 oktober 2026. Daarnaast is er de Bronze Edition, waarin beide delen zijn samengebracht. Deze digitale uitvoering bevat de volledige acht uur durende productie en kost £48.
Voor de verzamelaar
Ook fysieke uitvoeringen maken deel uit van de nieuwe release. De Silver Edition, met een prijs van £68, bevat naast de digitale downloads beide collector’s-edities op cd. De twee delen worden samen geleverd als een vierdiscset in jewel cases met een slipcase. Voor verzamelaars zijn er vervolgens twee uitgebreidere uitvoeringen. De Gold Limited Edition verschijnt in een oplage van slechts 300 exemplaren en kost £95. Naast de cd’s en digitale downloads bevat deze editie een notebook, mok, koelkastmagneet en een set ansichtkaarten met materiaal achter de schermen.
De meest uitgebreide uitvoering is de Platinum Limited Edition, eveneens beperkt tot 300 exemplaren. Deze kost £119 en bevat alle onderdelen van de Gold Edition, aangevuld met het exclusieve ‘Young Bond Intelligence Report’-magazine.
SilverFin krijgt nieuw leven
Met Young Bond: SilverFin wordt een belangrijk hoofdstuk uit de literaire Bondgeschiedenis opnieuw tot leven gebracht. De productie biedt niet alleen een nieuwe manier om Charlie Higsons verhaal te beleven, maar introduceert Young Bond ook bij een nieuwe generatie luisteraars. Voor verzamelaars is vooral de combinatie van verschillende uitvoeringen interessant. Van een eenvoudige digitale download tot een gelimiteerde Platinum Edition met cd’s, exclusief magazine en memorabilia: SilverFin verschijnt dit najaar in meerdere gedaanten.

The adventures of a young James Bond will take on a new dimension this autumn. Ian Fleming Publications and Big Finish Productions are releasing Young Bond: SilverFin as a large-scale, full-cast audio drama. For collectors and enthusiasts, several editions are available to pre-order, ranging from a digital edition to highly limited collector’s editions.
The audio drama is based on SilverFin, the first Young Bond novel by Charlie Higson, originally published in 2005. The story is set during Bond’s school years and follows thirteen-year-old James during his first year at Eton College. A mysterious disappearance eventually leads him to Scotland, where he becomes involved in a dangerous secret surrounding Loch SilverFin.
Sixteen episodes
The new production consists of sixteen episodes, each approximately half an hour long, providing around eight hours of listening in total. The story is divided into two parts of approximately four hours each. The production is presented as a full-cast audio drama, with different actors portraying the various characters. This takes the production beyond a traditional audiobook, in which a single narrator reads the entire story.
The role of the young James Bond is played by Isaac Rouse, while Charlotte McBurney provides the voice of Wilder Lawless. An extensive search was conducted to find the right actor for Bond: more than 500 candidates submitted auditions, after which twelve actors were invited to a studio casting session. Rouse was ultimately chosen as the voice of the young secret agent.
A new voice for Young Bond
According to writer and director Barnaby Edwards, Rouse’s interpretation closely reflects the Bond described in the novels by Fleming and Higson. This is not the seemingly invincible secret agent audiences know from the films, but a young Bond who is intelligent, determined, vulnerable and curious at the same time. Edwards also adapted the novel for audio and directed the production. Robert Valentine serves as script editor and producer, alongside Lizzie Worsdell. The music is composed by Joe Kraemer, while Nicholas Briggs and Jason Haigh-Ellery are involved as executive producers.
Digital editions
For listeners primarily interested in the audio itself, two separate digital editions are available. Part 1 and Part 2 each run for 240 minutes and can be purchased separately for £24.99. With Young Bond: SilverFin, an important chapter in Bond’s literary history is being brought back to life.
