Op 13 april 1953 vieren we dat James Bond het levenslicht zag met de komst van het eerste James Bond-verhaal Casino Royale.
Ter gelegenheid van deze mijlpaal was Bondesque Magazine uitgenodigd door Ian Fleming Publications om dit samen te vieren. Hoofdredacteur Merlijn Kuiper en redacteur Gosse Drent van James Bond Nederland reisde af naar de Engelse hoofdstad Londen op de dag dat het eerste James Bond-boek verscheen: 13 april. De locatie was bijzonder te noemen: The Reading Room in The London Library, gelegen aan St. James’s Square in hartje Londen. Die locatie was niet willekeurig gekozen: zowel Ian Fleming als Albert Broccoli hadden een lidmaatschap voor het leven van deze bibliotheek. De bibliotheek heeft een unieke collectie van boeken.
James Bond saw the light of day on 13 April 1953 with the arrival of the first James Bond story Casino Royale.
To mark this milestone, Bondesque Magazine was invited by Ian Fleming Publications to celebrate together. Editor-in-chief Merlijn Kuiper and editor Gosse Drent of James Bond Nederland travelled to the English capital London on the day the first James Bond book was published: 13 April. The location was special: The Reading Room at The London Library, located on St James’s Square in the heart of London. That location was not chosen at random: both Ian Fleming and Albert Broccoli had lifetime memberships to this library. The library has a unique collection of books.
Hoe kan je het beste deze mijlpaal van James Bond vieren dan bij binnenkomst getrakteerd worden op een glas Taittinger champagne. Hoewel Bond in de boeken verschillende merken champagne drinkt, komt Taittinger verre weg het meeste voor: Casino Royale, Moonraker, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service en 007 in New York. Ook in de film From Russia With Love is het merk kort te zien.
Op diverse plekken in The Reading Room werd aandacht besteed aan James Bond en Ian Fleming. Zo stond er op een tafel een goudkleurige Royal typemachine (eentje zoals Fleming had) en de ledenadministratie van The London Library lag open op de inschrijving van Fleming en Broccoli, compleet met handtekening. En natuurlijk konden de nieuwste edities van de Ian Fleming-boeken niet ontbreken.
Upon entering, we were treated to a glass of Taittinger champagne. Although Bond drinks several brands of champagne in the books, Taittinger is by far the most common: Casino Royale, Moonraker, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and 007 in New York. The brand also features briefly in the film From Russia With Love.
Several places in The Reading Room were dedicated to James Bond and Ian Fleming. There was a gold-coloured Royal typewriter (one like Fleming had) on a table, for instance, and the membership records of The London Library lay open on Fleming’s and Broccoli’s registration, complete with their signatures. And the latest editions of the Ian Fleming books could not be missed.
Bijzonder was een fotoreportage van Ian Fleming op de set van Dr. No. Hoewel een aantal foto’s bekend zijn, waren dit vooral unieke beelden. De foto’s waren in 1962 gemaakt door Frank Herrmann. Helaas is een deel van de foto’s van deze reportage verloren gegaan.
Maar er werd ook met woorden stilgestaan bij de 70e verjaardag van Bond. Twee nichtjes van Fleming, Kate Grimond en Lucy Fleming brachten een ode aan het eerste boek Casino Royale. Zo werden er passages voorgedragen, enkele recensies uit die tijd en vertelde ze over hun oom Ian Fleming. En ook vanuit Ian Fleming Publications werd stilgestaan bij het succes dat de schrijver uiteindelijk had. En zoals vele weten was dat soms tegen het advies van de uitgever destijds: Jonathan Cape.
Of particular note was a photo shoot of Ian Fleming on the set of Dr No. Although some of the photos are familiar, these were mostly unique images. The photos had been taken in 1962 by Frank Herrmann. Unfortunately, some of the photos from this reportage have been lost.
But words were also used to mark Bond’s 70th birthday. Two of Fleming’s nieces, Kate Grimond and Lucy Fleming paid tribute to the first book Casino Royale. This included reading passages, some reviews from the time and talking about their uncle Ian Fleming. And also from Ian Fleming Publications, they reflected on the success the writer eventually had. And as many know, that was sometimes against the advice of the publisher at the time: Jonathan Cape.
Na de mooi gesproken woorden was het tijd voor een receptie met hapjes en drankjes. Het gezelschap bestonden onderanderen uit de schrijvers van James Bond-boeken zoals Kim Sherwood, Charlie Higson en Steve Cole, EON Productions archivaris Meg Simmonds. Maar ook vele andere bekenden uit de James Bond-wereld zoals Mark O’Connell, Ajay Chowdhury en Matthew Fields (auteurs Some Kind Of Hero) en Doug Redenius van The Ian Fleming Foundation. Mede door corona was het een lange tijd geleden dat we deze mensen gezien en gesproken hadden.
Het vieren van de verjaardag van James Bond kon niet beter dan op deze plek en met zoveel bijzondere mensen.
After the beautifully spoken words, it was time for a reception with snacks and drinks. The group included James Bond book authors Kim Sherwood, Charlie Higson and Steve Cole, EON Productions archivist Meg Simmonds and many other acquaintances from the James Bond world such as Mark O’Connell, Ajay Chowdhury and Matthew Fields (authors Some Kind Of Hero) and Doug Redenius of The Ian Fleming Foundation. Partly because of corona, it had been a long time since we had seen and spoken to these people.
It was a special event at a special venue and great people.
