On The Tracks of 007 keert terug naar Japan

Voor James Bond-liefhebbers die hun favoriete films het liefst niet alleen bekijken, maar letterlijk achterna reizen, staat er in 2027 een bijzondere bestemming op het programma. On The Tracks of 007 organiseert van 30 april tot en met 14 mei 2027 een vijftiendaagse reis door Japan, ter gelegenheid van de zestigste verjaardag van You Only Live Twice.

De tour voert deelnemers van Tokio naar Kagoshima en bezoekt vrijwel alle belangrijke Japanse filmlocaties uit de vijfde Bondfilm. Het fenomeen On The Tracks of 007 is inmiddels een begrip binnen de internationale James Bond-gemeenschap. De organisatie van Martijn Mulder combineert reizen met diepgaande kennis van de filmlocaties, waardoor deelnemers niet simpelweg toeristische bezienswaardigheden bezoeken, maar daadwerkelijk in de voetsporen van 007 treden. Eerdere reizen voerden Bondfans onder meer naar Jamaica, Thailand, Italië, Portugal, Zwitserland en Japan. De eerste Japan-tour vond plaats in 2017, toen veertig fans uit verschillende landen samen het vijftigjarig jubileum van You Only Live Twice vierden.

Van Tokio naar Kagoshima

De nieuwe YOLT60 Tour of Japan begint in het iconische Tokyo New Otani Hotel. Dat hotel deed in You Only Live Twice dienst als het hoofdkwartier van Osato Chemicals en werd in 1966 daadwerkelijk gebruikt door de filmploeg. Deelnemers krijgen in Tokio een rondleiding en bovendien de gelegenheid om de stad op eigen gelegenheid te ontdekken.

Daarna gaat de reis verder per Shinkansen naar Wakayama. Vanuit daar staat een bezoek aan Nachisan op het programma, een van de meest afgelegen locaties die voor You Only Live Twice werd gebruikt. De omgeving vormde het decor voor de spectaculaire scène waarin Bond en Kissy Suzuki trouwen bij een afgelegen schrijn. Ook de wereld van de ninja’s krijgt tijdens deze etappe volop aandacht. Vervolgens gaat het richting Kyoto, waar onder meer Himeji Castle wordt bezocht. Het imposante kasteel was in de film de locatie van Tiger Tanaka’s ninjatrainingscentrum.

Ook Kobe maakt deel uit van de route, waarna de reis verdergaat naar Nagasaki. Daar staat een bijzondere excursie naar Hashima, beter bekend als Battleship Island of ‘Dead Island’, gepland. Het verlaten eiland werd later beroemd als visuele inspiratie voor het eiland van Raoul Silva in Skyfall.

De finale in Kagoshima

Het laatste deel van de reis speelt zich af in Kagoshima, waar de deelnemers verblijven in het Shiroyama Hotel. Ook dat hotel heeft een directe band met You Only Live Twice: Sean Connery en andere leden van de cast en crew verbleven hier tijdens de opnamen in 1966. Vanuit Kagoshima worden onder meer de vulkanische omgeving, Tanaka’s huis en het vissersdorp Akime bezocht. In Akime werd een belangrijk deel van Bonds undercoverbestaan als Japanse visser opgenomen. Daarmee volgt de reis een route die niet alleen iconische filmlocaties omvat, maar ook laat zien waarom Japan zo’n bepalende rol speelde in de sfeer en uitstraling van You Only Live Twice.

De reis kost 775.000 Japanse yen per persoon, ongeveer €4.150, gebaseerd op verblijf in een tweepersoonskamer. Voor een eenpersoonskamer geldt een toeslag van 200.000 yen. In de prijs zijn veertien hotelovernachtingen, ontbijt, vervoer binnen Japan en entreegelden inbegrepen. Internationale vluchten, maaltijden en drankjes zijn niet inbegrepen. De groep wordt bewust beperkt tot maximaal veertig deelnemers, met een minimum van 25 deelnemers.

Voor Bondfans is dit dan ook meer dan een gewone rondreis door Japan. Het is een kans om een van de meest exotische hoofdstukken uit de geschiedenis van 007 letterlijk binnen te stappen. Zestig jaar na de première van You Only Live Twicekrijgen liefhebbers opnieuw de mogelijkheid om van Osato Chemicals tot Blofelds vulkaan en van Tokyo tot Kagoshima de sporen van James Bond te volgen.

For James Bond fans who prefer not only to watch their favourite films but to literally follow in their footsteps, a very special destination awaits in 2027. On The Tracks of 007 is organising a fifteen-day tour of Japan from 30 April to 14 May 2027, marking the sixtieth anniversary of You Only Live Twice.

The tour takes participants from Tokyo to Kagoshima, visiting virtually all of the major Japanese filming locations featured in the fifth Bond film. On The Tracks of 007 has become a well-known phenomenon within the international James Bond community. Organised by Martijn Mulder, the tours combine travel with an in-depth knowledge of the filming locations, allowing participants to experience far more than simply visiting tourist attractions – they can genuinely follow in the footsteps of 007. Previous tours have taken Bond fans to destinations including Jamaica, Thailand, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Japan. The first Japan tour took place in 2017, when forty fans from various countries came together to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of You Only Live Twice.

From Tokyo to Kagoshima

The new YOLT60 Tour of Japan begins at the iconic Tokyo New Otani Hotel. In You Only Live Twice, the hotel served as the headquarters of Osato Chemicals and was actually used by the film crew during production in 1966. Participants will be given a guided tour in Tokyo and will also have the opportunity to explore the city at their leisure.

The journey then continues by Shinkansen to Wakayama. From there, the group will visit Nachisan, one of the more remote locations used for You Only Live Twice. The area provided the setting for the spectacular scene in which Bond and Kissy Suzuki are married at a remote shrine. The world of the ninja will also feature prominently during this part of the tour.

The journey then continues towards Kyoto, where Himeji Castle is among the locations visited. The imposing castle served as the location of Tiger Tanaka’s ninja training centre in the film.

Kobe is also included in the itinerary, before the tour continues to Nagasaki. Here, participants will take a special excursion to Hashima, better known as Battleship Island or ‘Dead Island’. The abandoned island later became famous as a visual inspiration for the island of Raoul Silva in Skyfall.

The Finale in Kagoshima

The final part of the journey takes place in Kagoshima, where participants will stay at the Shiroyama Hotel. This hotel also has a direct connection to You Only Live Twice: Sean Connery and other members of the cast and crew stayed here during filming in 1966. From Kagoshima, the group will visit, among other locations, the volcanic surroundings, Tanaka’s house and the fishing village of Akime. A significant part of Bond’s undercover life as a Japanese fisherman was filmed in Akime. The tour therefore follows a route that not only includes iconic filming locations, but also demonstrates why Japan played such a defining role in the atmosphere and visual identity of You Only Live Twice.

The tour costs ¥775,000 per person, approximately €4,150, based on twin-room accommodation. A single-room supplement of ¥200,000 applies. The price includes fourteen nights’ accommodation, breakfast, transport within Japan and entrance fees. International flights, meals and drinks are not included. The group is deliberately limited to a maximum of forty participants, with a minimum of 25 participants required.

For Bond fans, this is therefore much more than an ordinary tour of Japan. It is an opportunity to literally step into one of the most exotic chapters in the history of 007. Sixty years after the premiere of You Only Live Twice, fans will once again have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of James Bond, from Osato Chemicals to Blofeld’s volcano and from Tokyo to Kagoshima.
