Bijna zeventig jaar nadat James Bond voor het eerst als stripheld in de Britse kranten verscheen, krijgen de vroegste avonturen van 007 een nieuwe, uitgebreide uitgave. Titan Comics brengt Ian Fleming’s James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 uit, een 296 pagina’s tellende hardcover waarin de eerste zeven volledige James Bond-krantenstrips zijn verzameld.
Voor Bondliefhebbers is het een uitgave met een bijzondere historische waarde. De strips verschenen oorspronkelijk tussen juli 1958 en mei 1961 in de Daily Express, dus nog vóór Dr. No in 1962 de bioscoopreeks met Sean Connery lanceerde. De nieuwe collectie brengt daarmee een stukje James Bond-geschiedenis bijeen dat jarenlang vooral verspreid te vinden was in oude kranten, herdrukken en gespecialiseerde uitgaven. Centraal staat het werk van tekenaar John McLusky, de kunstenaar die vanaf de allereerste strip verantwoordelijk was voor de visuele interpretatie van Fleming’s geheim agent. Hij tekende de eerste Bond-strip in 1958 en zou uiteindelijk dertien Fleming-verhalen voor de krant bewerken en tekenen. Zijn stijl werd daarmee een van de eerste bepalende visuele interpretaties van James Bond.
De nieuwe Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 bevat de volgende zeven verhalen:

- From Russia, with Love
- Dr. No
- Goldfinger
Het zijn niet zomaar zeven verhalen uit de Bond-canon. Het gaat om de allereerste zeven volledige krantenavonturen die verschenen nadat de Daily Express Fleming’s romans naar het stripmedium had laten bewerken. De verhalen werden aangepast door Anthony Hern, Henry Gammidge en Peter O’Donnell, terwijl McLusky de tekeningen verzorgde.
Meer dan een herdruk
Juist de extra’s maken deze nieuwe uitgave interessant voor verzamelaars. Titan heeft namelijk niet alleen de oorspronkelijke strips opnieuw verzameld, maar ook een uitgebreide galerij opgenomen met gescande originele tekeningen uit het archief van John McLusky. Die selectie werd gemaakt door McLusky’s familie. Daarmee biedt het boek niet alleen de mogelijkheid om de klassieke strips opnieuw te lezen, maar ook om een kijkje te nemen achter de schermen van het tekenwerk.
Dat originele materiaal is een belangrijk onderdeel van de aantrekkingskracht van de collectie. McLusky’s Bond was immers de eerste James Bond die op grote schaal door lezers werd gezien. Zijn versie van 007 ontstond voordat Sean Connery, Terence Young en de producenten Albert R. Broccoli en Harry Saltzman het beeld van de film-Bond definitief zouden bepalen. De strip moest daarom rechtstreeks putten uit Fleming’s beschrijvingen. Tegelijkertijd gaf McLusky Bond een eigen gezicht en uitstraling. Zijn krachtige, enigszins hoekige tekenstijl paste uitstekend bij de harde wereld van Fleming. In de loop van de jaren zou zijn interpretatie steeds herkenbaarder worden.
Een Bond uit een andere tijd
Dat maakt de strips ook vandaag nog interessant. De verhalen zijn duidelijk afkomstig uit een periode waarin James Bond nog in de eerste plaats de literaire creatie van Ian Fleming was. Toch zijn veel elementen aanwezig die later onlosmakelijk met 007 zouden worden verbonden: exotische locaties, spectaculaire achtervolgingen, gevaarlijke tegenstanders, vrouwen, geweld en uiteraard de nodige drank en gadgets.
De nieuwe collectie laat bovendien goed zien hoe Fleming’s relatief complexe romans moesten worden aangepast voor een dagelijks krantenformat. De verhalen werden teruggebracht tot korte afleveringen die de lezer telkens opnieuw naar de krant moesten laten grijpen, terwijl McLusky de taak kreeg om Fleming’s wereld in een beperkt aantal tekeningen per aflevering tot leven te brengen.
De eerste strip, Casino Royale, verscheen op 7 juli 1958. Daarna volgden Live and Let Die, Moonraker en de andere vroege Bond-verhalen elkaar snel op. Henry Gammidge werd de belangrijkste schrijver van de reeks en werkte uiteindelijk aan elf Bond-verhalen. Peter O’Donnell, later bekend als de bedenker van Modesty Blaise, schreef de stripbewerking van Dr. No.
Een nieuwe standaarduitgave?
De timing van Titan’s collectie is opvallend. Hoewel de klassieke strips eerder zijn herdrukt, worden ze nu opnieuw als één omvangrijke hardcover gepresenteerd, compleet met aanvullend archiefmateriaal. De titel Vol. 1 maakt bovendien duidelijk dat Titan ook de andere verhalen opnieuw gaat uitgeven. De omslag van deze uitgave is gemaakt door Chris Weston.
Ian Fleming’s James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 verschijnt volgens Titan in 2027. De uitgever vermeldt momenteel 23 februari als releasedatum . De hardcover telt 296 pagina’s, krijgt ISBN 9781806180578 en heeft een adviesprijs van $49,99.
Almost seventy years after James Bond first appeared as a comic-strip hero in British newspapers, 007’s earliest adventures are receiving a new and expanded edition. Titan Comics is publishing Ian Fleming’s James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1, a 296-page hardcover collecting the first seven full-length James Bond newspaper comic strips.
For Bond fans, this is an edition of particular historical significance. The strips originally appeared in the Daily Expressbetween July 1958 and May 1961, well before Dr No launched the film series starring Sean Connery in 1962. The new collection therefore brings together an important piece of James Bond history that, for many years, could primarily be found scattered across old newspapers, reprints and specialist publications. At the heart of the collection is the work of artist John McLusky, the man responsible for the visual interpretation of Fleming’s secret agent from the very first strip. He drew the first Bond strip in 1958 and would ultimately illustrate thirteen of Fleming’s stories for the newspaper. His style thus became one of the earliest defining visual interpretations of James Bond.
The new Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 contains the following seven stories:

These are not simply seven stories from the Bond canon. They are the first seven full-length newspaper adventures published after the Daily Express commissioned comic-strip adaptations of Fleming’s novels. The stories were adapted by Anthony Hern, Henry Gammidge and Peter O’Donnell, with McLusky providing the artwork.
More than a reprint
It is the additional material that makes this new edition particularly interesting to collectors. Titan has not simply brought together the original strips; the book also features an extensive gallery of scanned original artwork from the John McLusky archive. The selection was made by McLusky’s family. The book therefore not only allows readers to revisit the classic strips, but also offers a glimpse behind the scenes at the original artwork.
This original material is an important part of the collection’s appeal. McLusky’s Bond was, after all, the first version of James Bond to be seen by a mass audience. His interpretation of 007 predates the point at which Sean Connery, Terence Young and producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman would establish the definitive image of the cinematic Bond. The strip therefore had to draw directly on Fleming’s descriptions. At the same time, McLusky gave Bond his own distinctive appearance and presence. His powerful, slightly angular drawing style was perfectly suited to Fleming’s hard-edged world. Over the years, his interpretation would become increasingly recognisable.
A Bond from another era
That is what makes the strips so interesting even today. The stories clearly come from a period when James Bond was still primarily Ian Fleming’s literary creation. Yet many of the elements that would later become inseparable from 007 are already present: exotic locations, spectacular car chases, dangerous adversaries, women, violence and, of course, the requisite drinks and gadgets.
The new collection also provides a fascinating insight into how Fleming’s relatively complex novels had to be adapted for a daily newspaper format. The stories were condensed into short instalments designed to keep readers returning to the newspaper each day, while McLusky was tasked with bringing Fleming’s world to life through a limited number of panels in each instalment.
The first strip, Casino Royale, appeared on 7 July 1958. Live and Let Die, Moonraker and the other early Bond stories followed in relatively quick succession. Henry Gammidge became the principal writer of the series and eventually worked on eleven Bond stories. Peter O’Donnell, later known as the creator of Modesty Blaise, wrote the comic-strip adaptation of Dr No.
A new definitive edition?
The timing of Titan’s collection is noteworthy. Although the classic strips have been reprinted before, they are now being presented once again as a substantial hardcover collection, complete with additional archival material. The title Vol. 1 also makes it clear that Titan intends to reissue the remaining stories as well. Coverart of this edition is by Chris Weston.
Ian Fleming’s James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1 is due to be published by Titan in 2027. The publisher currently lists 23 February 2027 as the release date. The hardcover contains 296 pages, carries ISBN 9781806180578 and has a recommended retail price of $49.99.
