Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht presenteert van 4 februari tot en met 10 september 2023 een overzichtstentoonstelling van de Britse celebrity fotograaf Terry O’Neill (1938-2019). De expositie FAMOUS toont meer dan 125 portretten van internationale muzieklegendes, filmsterren en mode-iconen uit met name de jaren ’60 en ’70. Naast exclusieve colourised editions ligt de focus op klassieke zwart-wit portretten.
Terry O’Neill is wereldwijd een van de meest iconische en invloedrijke fotografen van de afgelopen 60 jaar. Ook leden van de Britse koninklijke familie en prominente politici stonden voor zijn camera. Met zijn ongedwongen, intieme foto’s liet hij de menselijke kant van celebrities zien. De legendarische fotograaf onderhield met veel van hen een persoonlijke band.
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht will present a retrospective exhibition by British celebrity photographer Terry O’Neill (1938-2019) from 4 February to 10 September 2023. The FAMOUS exhibition features more than 125 portraits of international music legends, film stars and fashion icons from the 1960s and 1970s in particular. Besides exclusive colourised editions, the focus is on classic black-and-white portraits.
Worldwide, Terry O’Neill is one of the most iconic and influential photographers of the past 60 years. Members of the British royal family and prominent politicians were also in front of his camera. His casual, intimate photographs showed the human side of celebrities. The legendary photographer maintained a personal relationship with many of them.
De lijst van internationale beroemdheden is indrukwekkend. O’Neill fotografeerde The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie en Elton John in hun beginjaren. Hij portretteerde sterren als Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch, Liza Minnelli, Roger Moore en Sean Connery. Portretten van Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot en Faye Dunaway behoren tot zijn bekendste foto’s. Ook supermodellen als Jean Shrimpton, Christy Turlington en Kate Moss ontbreken niet.
Terry O’Neill startte in 1958 in zijn woonplaats Londen als fotograaf. Hij was een echte pionier op het gebied van celebrity fotografie. Na de tabloid Daily Sketch werkte hij al snel in opdracht voor de grootste dagbladen en magazines ter wereld zoals Newsweek, TIME, Vanity Fair en Vogue. Het omvangrijk en beeldbepalend oeuvre van O’Neill is gebundeld in talrijke fotoboeken. De National Portrait Gallery in Londen heeft 80 portretten in haar collectie. In 2019 is hij voor zijn verdiensten voor de fotografie benoemd tot Commandeur in de Orde van het Britse Rijk.
The list of international celebrities is impressive. O’Neill photographed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Elton John in their early years. He portrayed stars such as Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Ursula Andress, Raquel Welch, Liza Minnelli, Roger Moore and Sean Connery. Portraits of Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Faye Dunaway, to whom he was married for several years, are among his best-known photographs. Supermodels like Jean Shrimpton, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss are not missing either.
Terry O’Neill started as a photographer in his hometown of London in 1958. He became a true pioneer of celebrity photography. After the tabloid Daily Sketch, he was soon working on assignment for the world’s biggest dailies and magazines such as Newsweek, TIME, Vanity Fair and Vogue. O’Neill’s extensive and image-defining oeuvre has been collected in numerous photobooks. The National Portrait Gallery in London has 80 portraits in its collection. In 2019, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his achievements in photography.
De tentoonstelling is samengesteld rondom de thema’s film, muziek en mode. De karakteristieke stijlkamers en kabinetten van het monumentale museum vormen een stijlvol decor. Er is een Diva salon, Glamour room, James Bond room en een ruimte gewijd aan de extravagante interieurs van sterren. Ook worden ondersteunende video’s getoond.
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof realiseert de expositie in nauwe samenwerking met gastcurator Feiko Koster van Koster Fine Art Gallery, gevestigd in Het Arsenaal in Naarden-Vesting.
The exhibition is curated around the themes of film, music and fashion. The monumental museum’s distinctive period rooms and cabinets provide a stylish backdrop. There is a Diva salon, Glamour room, James Bond room and a room dedicated to stars’ extravagant interiors. Supporting videos are also shown.
Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof is realising the exhibition in close cooperation with guest curator Feiko Koster of Koster Fine Art Gallery, located in Het Arsenaal in Naarden-Vesting.
