Toen de NFT-hype in 2021 en 2022 zijn hoogtepunt bereikte, leek de toekomst van digitaal verzamelen niet te stoppen. Ook James Bond maakte zijn entree in deze nieuwe markt met exclusieve digitale verzamelobjecten via het platform VeVe. Vier jaar later is van die euforie weinig over. De meeste Bond NFT’s zijn inmiddels fors in waarde gedaald en sommige exemplaren worden nog slechts voor een fractie van hun oorspronkelijke prijs aangeboden. Dat meldt MI6-HQ in een analyse van de huidige markt.
Wat zijn NFT’s?
NFT staat voor Non-Fungible Token: een uniek digitaal eigendomsbewijs dat wordt vastgelegd op een blockchain. In tegenstelling tot cryptovaluta zoals Bitcoin is iedere NFT uniek en daardoor niet één-op-één uitwisselbaar. Het eigendom van een NFT geeft de koper een digitaal certificaat van authenticiteit, terwijl het onderliggende kunstwerk of de afbeelding gewoon door anderen bekeken en gekopieerd kan worden. Tijdens de wereldwijde NFT-rage werden sommige digitale verzamelobjecten voor honderdduizenden euro’s verkocht, maar nadat de belangstelling voor deze markt afnam, kelderden de prijzen van veel collecties.
James Bond betreedt de digitale wereld
James Bond maakte zijn officiële debuut op VeVe in 2023. In samenwerking met EON Productions en Danjaq verscheen de James Bond 60th Anniversary Legacy Series, een collectie digitale 3D-verzamelobjecten gebaseerd op iconische filmprops uit de lange geschiedenis van de Bond-films. De eerste uitgave bevatte een jetpack uit Thunderball, het laserpistool uit Moonraker en de bekende SPECTRE-ring uit Spectre. Enkele weken later volgde een tweede serie met de Q-Boat uit The World Is Not Enough, de attachékoffer uit From Russia With Love en het boek met verborgen afluisterapparatuur uit Thunderball.
De objecten werden verkocht volgens het zogenoemde Blind Box-principe. Voor een vast bedrag ontvingen kopers willekeurig één van de beschikbare digitale objecten, waarbij de zeldzaamste exemplaren in zeer beperkte oplage verkrijgbaar waren. Vooral de zogenoemde Secret Rare-uitgaven waren binnen korte tijd uitverkocht en verschenen vrijwel direct daarna tegen veel hogere prijzen op de secundaire markt.
Ambitieuze plannen
De plannen voor de James Bond-collectie waren ambitieus. VeVe kondigde aan dat de Legacy Series uiteindelijk uit zeven afzonderlijke reeksen zou bestaan, goed voor in totaal 21 verschillende 3D-verzamelobjecten. Verzamelaars die uit iedere serie minimaal één NFT wisten te bemachtigen, zouden worden beloond met een exclusief digitaal jubileumlogo. Wie alle zeven series compleet maakte, zou bovendien een speciale gouden variant ontvangen.
Die plannen werden echter nooit werkelijkheid. Na de tweede Legacy Series verschenen de aangekondigde series S003 tot en met S007 niet meer. Een officiële verklaring voor het stopzetten van de collectie is nooit gegeven, waardoor de James Bond Legacy Series uiteindelijk bleef steken op slechts zes digitale 3D-objecten. Naast deze collectie bracht VeVe eerder wel vier afzonderlijke reeksen uit met digitale filmposters van alle vijfentwintig officiële James Bond-films, van Dr. No tot en met No Time To Die, maar deze maakten geen deel uit van de Legacy Series.
Waarde verdampt
De huidige markt laat zien hoe sterk de belangstelling voor NFT’s de afgelopen jaren is afgenomen. Waar sommige James Bond-objecten kort na hun introductie voor honderden of zelfs duizenden dollars werden doorverkocht, worden veel van dezelfde NFT’s tegenwoordig aangeboden voor slechts enkele tientallen dollars. Ook de zeldzaamste uitvoeringen hebben een groot deel van hun oorspronkelijke marktwaarde verloren. Die ontwikkeling sluit aan bij de bredere NFT-markt, waar het handelsvolume sinds het einde van de hype sterk is teruggelopen en de speculatieve vraag vrijwel volledig is verdwenen.
Voor James Bond-verzamelaars vormen de VeVe-uitgaven daarmee een opmerkelijk hoofdstuk in de geschiedenis van 007-merchandise. De digitale objecten zijn officieel gelicenseerd en gebaseerd op originele rekwisieten uit de films, maar hun ontwikkeling laat zien dat ook exclusieve digitale verzamelobjecten geen garantie bieden voor een waardevaste investering. Uiteindelijk blijken ook NFT’s slechts zoveel waard te zijn als een verzamelaar bereid is ervoor te betalen.

According to an analysis by MI6-HQ, the market for James Bond NFTs has collapsed significantly.
What Are NFTs?
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token: a unique digital certificate of ownership recorded on a blockchain. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, every NFT is unique and cannot be exchanged on a like-for-like basis. Ownership of an NFT provides the buyer with a digital certificate of authenticity, while the underlying artwork or image can still be viewed and copied by anyone. During the global NFT boom, some digital collectibles sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds, but as interest in the market declined, the value of many collections plummeted.
James Bond Enters the Digital World
James Bond made his official debut on VeVe in 2023. In collaboration with EON Productions and Danjaq, the James Bond 60th Anniversary Legacy Series was launched, featuring a collection of digital 3D collectibles based on some of the most iconic props from the Bond films. The first release included the Jet Pack from Thunderball, the Laser Gun from Moonraker and the famous SPECTRE Ring from Spectre. A few weeks later, a second series followed, featuring the Q-Boat from The World Is Not Enough, the Attaché Case from From Russia with Love and the Book with Recorder from Thunderball.
The collectibles were sold using VeVe’s Blind Box system. Buyers paid a fixed price but did not know which digital collectible they would receive. The rarest editions were produced in extremely limited numbers, with the coveted Secret Rare variants selling out almost immediately before appearing on the secondary market at substantially higher prices.
Ambitious Plans
VeVe’s ambitions for the James Bond collection were considerable. The Legacy Series was intended to consist of seven separate releases, comprising a total of 21 different 3D collectibles. Collectors who acquired at least one NFT from each series would unlock an exclusive digital 60th anniversary logo, while those who completed all seven series would receive a special gold edition.
Those plans, however, never came to fruition. Following the release of the second Legacy Series, the announced S003 through S007 collections never materialised. No official explanation has ever been given for the cancellation, leaving the James Bond Legacy Series with just six 3D collectibles instead of the planned twenty-one. Prior to the Legacy Series, VeVe had also released four separate collections featuring digital posters from all twenty-five official James Bond films, from Dr. No to No Time to Die, although these were not part of the Legacy Series.
Value Evaporates
The current market demonstrates just how dramatically interest in NFTs has declined over the past few years. While some James Bond collectibles were resold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars shortly after their release, many of those same NFTs are now available for only a few dozen dollars. Even the rarest editions have lost a significant proportion of their original market value. This reflects the wider NFT market, where trading volumes have fallen sharply since the boom ended and speculative demand has largely disappeared.
For James Bond collectors, the VeVe releases remain a fascinating chapter in the history of 007 merchandise. The digital collectibles are officially licensed and based on original props from the films, but their story illustrates that even exclusive digital collectables offer no guarantee of retaining their value. Ultimately, NFTs are worth only what another collector is willing to pay for them.
