The Goldfinger Files keert terug als definitieve editie

Na enkele jaren uitverkocht te zijn geweest, keert The Goldfinger Files dit najaar terug in een volledig herziene en sterk uitgebreide uitgave. Wat in 2020 verscheen als een bijzonder fotoboek over de Zwitserse opnames van Goldfinger is volgens de makers nu uitgegroeid tot de definitieve editie.

Met bijna een verdubbeling van het aantal pagina’s, honderden extra foto’s en nooit eerder gepubliceerd archiefmateriaal belooft dit een van de meest indrukwekkende James Bond-boeken van de afgelopen jaren te worden. De oorspronkelijke uitgave, destijds gepubliceerd door Steidl, groeide snel uit tot een geliefd naslagwerk onder Bond-verzamelaars. Het boek bracht de legendarische Alpine-sequentie van Goldfinger tot leven aan de hand van zeldzame foto’s, originele productiedocumenten en het oorspronkelijke typoscript van de film. Dankzij de ongebruikelijke beslissing van EON Productions om tijdens de opnames in juli 1964 journalisten en fotografen vrij toegang te geven tot de set in het Zwitserse Urserendal, ontstond een ongekend visueel archief van de productie. Fotografen als Hans Gerber, Josef Ritler en Erich Kocian legden vrijwel iedere stap van de opnames vast, aangevuld met privéfoto’s van hotelmedewerkers en lokale bewoners die destijds dicht bij de filmploeg stonden. 

Veel meer dan een herdruk

De nieuwe editie verschijnt niet als eenvoudige herdruk, maar als een volledig vernieuwde uitgave onder het label Edition Bleuchamp. Het boek groeit van 216 naar maar liefst 416 pagina’s en bevat ongeveer 750 illustraties. Daarnaast is de productie aanzienlijk luxer uitgevoerd, met vijfkleurendruk, goud op snee en een fors formaat van 27 bij 33 centimeter. Volgens de uitgever is het boek opgebouwd rond drie belangrijke pijlers: een volledig gereconstrueerde route van de opnames uit 1964, Guy Hamiltons geannoteerde script van de Alpine-sequentie en nieuwe ooggetuigenverslagen van mensen die destijds aanwezig waren tijdens de opnames. 

Een andere belangrijke toevoeging is The Goldfinger Guide, waarin de belangrijkste filmlocaties worden vergeleken met hoe ze er vandaag de dag uitzien. Daarmee krijgt het boek niet alleen waarde als historisch fotodocument, maar ook als reisgids voor Bond-liefhebbers die de Zwitserse locaties zelf willen bezoeken. 

Twee auteurs met een passie voor Bondgeschiedenis

Het boek is wederom samengesteld en geschreven door Steffen Appel en Peter Wälty. Beiden hebben de afgelopen jaren een uitstekende reputatie opgebouwd als onderzoekers van de Zwitserse geschiedenis van de James Bond-films. Appel beschikt over een indrukwekkend filmarchief en werkte in het verleden samen met diverse producenten van de Bond-films. Daarnaast maakte hij in 2015 deel uit van de productie van Spectre. Wälty studeerde geschiedenis en Engels aan de Universiteit van Zürich en publiceerde eerder onder meer James Bond und die Schweiz. Hun gezamenlijke kracht ligt in het combineren van diepgravend historisch onderzoek met een schat aan onbekend fotografisch materiaal, waardoor de boeken veel meer zijn dan traditionele “making of”-publicaties. 

Dat bewezen zij eerder al met The Blofeld Files, waarin zij de Zwitserse opnames van On Her Majesty’s Secret Service op dezelfde zorgvuldige wijze documenteerden. Net als dat boek lijkt ook The Goldfinger Files vooral te excelleren in het vertellen van het verhaal achter de foto’s, waarbij niet alleen de filmproductie centraal staat, maar ook de sfeer van de jaren zestig en de bijzondere relatie tussen de Bond-crew en de Zwitserse bevolking. 

Vanaf september verkrijgbaar

De nieuwe editie verschijnt in september en is vanaf nu te reserveren. Wie tijdens de voorverkoop bestelt, ontvangt een door beide auteurs gesigneerd exemplaar. Daarnaast biedt de uitgever gratis wereldwijde verzending aan. Met de enorme uitbreiding ten opzichte van de oorspronkelijke uitgave lijkt The Goldfinger Files niet alleen interessant voor verzamelaars die de eerste druk hebben gemist, maar ook voor bezitters van het originele Steidl-boek. De vele nieuwe documenten, extra foto’s en uitgebreide historische context maken deze editie tot een vrijwel volledig nieuw werk over een van de meest iconische scènes uit de Bondgeschiedenis.

After being out of print for several years, The Goldfinger Files will return this autumn in a completely revised and substantially expanded edition. Originally published in 2020 as a remarkable photographic book about the Swiss filming of Goldfinger, the new edition is described by its creators as the definitive version.

With almost twice as many pages, hundreds of additional photographs and previously unpublished archive material, the book promises to be one of the most impressive James Bond books of recent years. The original edition, published by Steidl, quickly became a much-loved reference work among Bond collectors. It brought the legendary Alpine sequence from Goldfinger to life through rare photographs, original production documents and the film’s original typescript. Thanks to the unusual decision by EON Productions to give journalists and photographers unrestricted access to the set in Switzerland’s Urseren Valley during filming in July 1964, an unprecedented visual archive of the production was created. Photographers such as Hans Gerber, Josef Ritler and Erich Kocian documented almost every stage of the filming, supplemented by private photographs taken by hotel staff and local residents who were in close proximity to the film crew at the time.

Much More Than a Reprint

The new edition is not simply a reprint, but a completely revised publication released under the Edition Bleuchamp label. The book has grown from 216 to an impressive 416 pages and contains around 750 illustrations. The production has also been considerably upgraded, featuring five-colour printing, gilt-edged pages and a substantial 27 × 33 cm format. According to the publisher, the book is built around three key elements: a fully reconstructed route of the 1964 filming locations, Guy Hamilton’s annotated script for the Alpine sequence, and new eyewitness accounts from people who were present during the filming.

Another major addition is The Goldfinger Guide, which compares the key filming locations with how they look today. This gives the book value not only as a historical photographic record, but also as a travel guide for Bond fans wishing to visit the Swiss locations themselves.

Two Authors with a Passion for Bond History

The book has once again been compiled and written by Steffen Appel and Peter Wälty. Over the past several years, both have established an excellent reputation as researchers of the Swiss history of the James Bond films. Appel has an impressive film archive and has previously worked with various Bond film producers. He was also involved in the production of Spectre in 2015.

Wälty studied history and English at the University of Zurich and has previously published works including James Bond und die Schweiz. Their combined strength lies in bringing together meticulous historical research with a wealth of previously unknown photographic material, making their books much more than traditional ‘making of’ publications.

They demonstrated this with The Blofeld Files, in which they documented the Swiss filming of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service with the same level of care and attention to detail. Like that book, The Goldfinger Files appears to excel at telling the story behind the photographs, focusing not only on the film production itself, but also on the atmosphere of the 1960s and the unique relationship between the Bond crew and the Swiss population.
