La-La Land Records heeft opnieuw een bijzondere James Bond-uitgave aangekondigd. Ditmaal is het de beurt aan de soundtrack van Never Say Never Again, die verschijnt als een uitgebreide en geremasterde 2-cd-set.
De gelimiteerde uitgave, waarvan wereldwijd slechts 5.000 exemplaren worden geproduceerd, biedt de meest complete presentatie van Michel Legrands filmmuziek tot nu toe. Never Say Never Again neemt een unieke plaats in binnen de geschiedenis van James Bond. De film betekende de terugkeer van Sean Connery als 007, twaalf jaar na Diamonds Are Forever. Omdat de productie buiten de officiële Eon-filmreeks tot stand kwam, kon componist Michel Legrand geen gebruikmaken van de bekende Bond-thema’s van Monty Norman en John Barry. In plaats daarvan schreef de Franse componist een geheel eigen score, die zich onderscheidt door invloeden uit jazz, funk en orkestrale filmmuziek.
Die afwijkende muzikale benadering maakte de soundtrack destijds onderwerp van discussie. Waar veel Bondfans een meer traditionele score verwachtten, koos Legrand voor een eigentijdse stijl die beter aansloot bij de sfeer van de vroege jaren tachtig. Inmiddels wordt zijn werk steeds vaker gezien als een interessante en gedurfde interpretatie van James Bond, die de bijzondere positie van Never Say Never Again binnen de franchise onderstreept.
Voor deze nieuwe uitgave heeft La-La Land Records de originele opnamen uitgebreid gerestaureerd en geremasterd. Producent Neil S. Bulk en mastering engineer Doug Schwartz maakten daarbij gebruik van de best beschikbare stereobronnen. Het resultaat is een aanzienlijk uitgebreidere presentatie van de filmmuziek dan ooit eerder is verschenen.
De eerste cd bevat de complete filmscore, inclusief talrijke cues die niet eerder officieel werden uitgebracht. Hierdoor krijgen luisteraars voor het eerst een vrijwel volledige weergave van Legrands muziek zoals die in de film te horen is.
Op de tweede cd is het oorspronkelijke soundtrackalbum uit 1983 opgenomen, aangevuld met extra bonusmateriaal. Opmerkelijk is dat dit album destijds uitsluitend in Japan op lp verscheen. Buiten Japan moesten liefhebbers het jarenlang doen met slechts een single van Lani Halls titelsong Never Say Never Again. Ook deze zeldzame opnamen zijn voor de nieuwe uitgave teruggevonden en toegevoegd aan de collectie.
Zoals gebruikelijk besteedt La-La Land Records veel aandacht aan de presentatie. De nieuwe release is voorzien van een volledig nieuw omslagontwerp van illustrator Jim Titus, terwijl de vormgeving in handen is van Dan Goldwasser. Daarnaast bevat het boekje uitgebreide liner notes van film- en muziekhistoricus Jon Burlingame, die ingaat op de totstandkoming van de film, de samenwerking met Michel Legrand en de bijzondere geschiedenis van de soundtrack.
Met een speelduur van bijna twee uur vormt deze uitgave zonder twijfel de meest complete editie van de Never Say Never Again-soundtrack die ooit is verschenen. Daarmee voegt La-La Land Records opnieuw een bijzondere titel toe aan zijn indrukwekkende reeks uitgebreide James Bond-soundtracks. Voor verzamelaars én liefhebbers van Bond-muziek is deze gelimiteerde uitgave dan ook een meer dan interessante aanvulling op de collectie.
La-La Land Records has announced another remarkable James Bond release. This time, the spotlight falls on the soundtrack to Never Say Never Again, which is being released as an expanded and remastered 2-CD set.
Limited to just 5,000 copies worldwide, the release offers the most comprehensive presentation of Michel Legrand’s score ever assembled. Never Say Never Again occupies a unique place in James Bond history. The film marked Sean Connery’s return as 007, twelve years after Diamonds Are Forever. As the production was made outside the official Eon Productions film series, composer Michel Legrand was unable to use the familiar Bond themes by Monty Norman and John Barry. Instead, the acclaimed French composer created an entirely original score, blending jazz, funk and orchestral influences into a distinctive musical identity.
Legrand’s unconventional approach divided opinion upon the film’s original release. While many Bond fans had expected a more traditional score, he opted for a contemporary style that reflected the atmosphere of the early 1980s. Today, his work is increasingly regarded as a bold and fascinating interpretation of James Bond, highlighting the unique position Never Say Never Again holds within the wider Bond franchise.
For this new release, La-La Land Records has painstakingly restored and remastered the original recordings. Producer Neil S. Bulk and mastering engineer Doug Schwartz worked from the best available stereo sources, resulting in a significantly expanded presentation of the score unlike anything previously released.
The first disc features the complete film score, including numerous cues that have never before received an official release. For the first time, listeners can experience an almost complete presentation of Legrand’s music as heard in the film.
The second disc contains the original 1983 soundtrack album, supplemented by additional bonus material. Interestingly, the album was originally released only on LP in Japan. Outside Japan, fans had to make do with nothing more than a single featuring Lani Hall’s title song, Never Say Never Again. These rare recordings have now been restored and included as part of this new collection.
As with all of its premium releases, La-La Land Records has paid close attention to the presentation. The set features an all-new cover illustration by Jim Titus, with art direction by Dan Goldwasser. The accompanying booklet also includes extensive liner notes by film music historian Jon Burlingame, exploring the making of the film, Michel Legrand’s contribution, and the remarkable history of the soundtrack.
With a running time of almost two hours, this release is without doubt the most complete edition of the Never Say Never Again soundtrack ever produced. It marks yet another outstanding addition to La-La Land Records’ impressive catalogue of expanded James Bond soundtracks. For collectors and Bond music enthusiasts alike, this limited edition is a highly desirable addition to any collection.
